This book is really good for those that have questions about Christianity. Based on the book of Romans, it's emphasis is one the best of Christianity. It is not a book on how to worship correctly (hence the title). I have had great fun using this book in a small group.

Great intro, especially if you are from a religious

background. I read a copy that was printed in the mid-60's a few years ago. I was a brand new born-again christian coming out of a Roman Catholic background. I understand that things are changing in the catholic church, praise God, but at the time,not much was said about God's grace, and this book helped me out of the religious baggage I had brought with me.Don't get me wrong, I am a bible believing christian, a former youth leader for a Foursquare denomination church, and I plan to do missionary work.This book is not about just doing whatever you feel like, but it is a rich, easy to read explanation of the Book of Romans that examines all the religious things that we do to try to please God so he gets off our backs, or so that we can feel superior to others. This book does a great job of going through Romans and examining our relationship with Christ. It is engaging for the intelligent as it covers the concepts in Romans which are God-breathed, and it is written in an easy to read manner. I have lent this book to many different kinds of people and they were all able to receive from it.It is wonderful for those who came from a legalistic christian background who are just begining to know Christ, so that they can know the freedom that is in Christ.

Nice book, a little old

Nice book, well written, simple projects that most people could do. I had hoped for some better quality speaker projects, that did not use Radio Shack speakers. I can get cheap used speakers from Goodwill that are as good or better than the projects in this book. I think that the 1990 book is too old, for anything I would want to build. It is good for a beginner, to get started. Maybe the newer edition will be more helpful, for me.

Excellent lectionary resource

One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).
This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.
An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are poems by Philipp Nicolai with Carl P. Daw Jr, and Alberto Taule; a photo of a cross of the community by the artisans of La Palma, El Salvador; a responsory reading by Miriam Therese Winter; and a painting by Glen Strock.
Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

Solid Thoughts on this new Movement

This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested understanding the role of Apostle and Prophet. These special offices of the church have been ignored, abused and mostly mis-understood. This is a great book to start a thorough biblical and contemporary study on the topic. C. Peter Wagner's understanding of scripture, expert opinion of Church Growth and personal experience are great resources on this vital topic. It should not be viewed as exhaustive but as the thoughts and understanding of one of the best thinkers in the evangelical church world today

GOOD, BUT STILL AN INSTITUTIONAL MINDSET !

Peter Wagner's "Apostles and Prophets: The Foundation of the Church" is 144 pages long and is divided into 8 chapters. Its main focus is on attempting to understand the proper role of those within the modern day church who function as apostles and prophets.

There are several strengths. First, Dr. Wagner has been a keen observer, commentator, and participant in various shifts and streams in the church for over 50 years and, as such, is bringing to our attention the re-emergence of apostles and prophets in the church today. Second, it is written in a conversational easy-to-read style that will make it accessible to a wider audience. Third, he deals with a number of issues that are important to the topic, such as apostles and prophets in real life, the relationship between apostles and prophets, the needs of apostles, the role of apostles, the history of the re-emergence of this role, scriptural foundations, etc.

A major drawback should be pointed out. There is still an institutional mindset in Wagner's understanding of the role of modern apostles. There is no discussion, as far as I can tell, of the need for a reformation of overall church structure back to a more biblical ecclesiology (i.e. the "house church network" model, Acts 2:41-47, 20:20, Rom 16:3-5, 1 Cor 16:19), so that the role of apostles and prophets can function properly in a healthy and biblical way. In other words, biblical apostles need a biblical church to function within. But, it appears that Wagner's idea is that the new apostles and prophets should just be grafted onto current institutional church systems. If that is done, it becomes easy then for otherwise genuine apostles simply to place themselves overtop of the modern day hierarchical pyramid structures of today's denominations and mission organizations. This can easily result in the abuse of power, unhealthy ambition, and rivalry.

Overall, this is a useful read for anyone interested in the shifts that are taking place within the church, for better or for worse.

Church Politics as Usual

An easy reading for the average believer. I was hoping to find some apostolic missions strategy in it, but disappointingly, the book is about establishing 21st century church government which would be led by newly instituted offices of modern day apostles and prophets. Rather than discussing apostolic missionaries, the book primarily deals with church politics. Aside from naming himself as an example of a modern apostle, his book makes you think about his proposition that the new apostles and prophets are the double-edged sword of the 21st century church hierarchy.

Good Book on Helping Others Through Christ

Neil Anderson continues his excellent authorship in Helping Others Find Freedom Through Christ by showing the reader one way people can be lovingly discipled into maturity in Jesus Christ. Among the important points covered in the book include:

1. While most people worry what other people think of them, we should be more concerned over what God thinks of us.

2. 7 characteristics from 2 Timothy 2:24-26 of the kind of person God uses.

3. We are limited in our binding and loosing of evil influences.

4. A person has to be responsible for his/her own setting aside the flesh and being renewed in the Spirit.

5. Regardless of our background, God will use us if we are yielded to Him and are compassionate towards others.

6. We have to trust God for what He alone can do and take responsibility for what we can do.

7. When listening to someone else's pain, do not take the offense up as your own (weep with them but do not take the pain personally).

8. We live in a rebellious age and cannot expect God's blessing if we rebel against those in authority!

9. 5 principles used by Daniel to make an appeal to one in authority over us.

10. Excellent notes on the futility of pride and why we need to admit our dependence on God.

The book seems to be Biblically-based instead of the newest trends in counseling and is full of practical advice.

... had a particular NEED for it but would be good to have

I heard a lot about this and bought it as a 'resource' and didn't think I had a particular NEED for it but would be good to have. Little did I know that two MAJOR life disasters would happen before it arrived and I was able to read it. I had to go out of state and was gone longer than expected due to the death of my mother. Something else very painful was taking place simultaneously and by the time I got home this had arrived in the mail and was there waiting for me. God knew how I would need it. The original title was, "Tell Your Heart to Beat Again" - a most excellent book!

Prescription for Discouragement

I not only read this book once I inhaled it over and over. It is one of the most hope giving books I have read in a long time. It would be a wonderful study for a small group. As a woman I found it very empowering. I highly suggest it to all, it encourages the even most seasoned Christian as well as lifts the spirits of a down trodden one.

About the Author
Dr. Derlega is Professor of Psychology at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. His research interests focus on self-disclosure in close relationships, coping with chronic diseases (especially HIV/AIDS), and gender roles. Dr. Derlega has written and/or edited a number of books on self-disclosure, social interaction and privacy issues in living with HIV, and gender and close relationships. His most recent book (with Kathryn Greene, Gust Yep, and Sandra Petronio) is, "PRIVACY AND DISCLOSURE OF HIV IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP: A SOURCEBOOK FOR RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS."

Dr. Winstead is Professor of Psychology and Chairperson in the Department of Psychology, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. Her research interests focus on gender and close relationships, social support, and coping with multiple roles. Dr. Winstead is co-author (with Jessica Griffin) of "Friendship Styles", published in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WOMEN AND GENDER, Volume One (Academic Press, 2001). She is also the author of research articles and books on social support as well as on gender a close relationships.

Dr. Jones is Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. His interests broadly span the areas of personality and social psychology, but have mainly focused on the impact of personality in interpersonal situations. In addition to publishing numerous articles and chapters on the topics of shyness, loneliness, guilt, trust, betrayal, and forgiveness, he has also published several edited volumes on the topics of personality and relationships. In addition, he has served as the editor of the "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology" and the "Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research."

Why would anyone want to buy the outdated, clinical-approach-only personality textbooks that are out there when they can have an updated, truly PERSONALITY-ORIENTED personality textbook such as this. This book goes into personality development in greater depth, tying current research and theory together. Written by experts in the field of personality / social psychology, this is a textbook for those who want to actually learn about or teach PERSONALITY development. If you want a clinical/therapy- oriented approach to personality, this text is not for you. If you want an excellent introductory textbook about personality development theories and contemporary research, snap this book up immediately.

hell of a book about a hell of a man

Erich 'Bubi' Hartmann - the Ace of all Aces: 352 Confirmed Kills. And here is his story. What a read! I couldn't put it down! I read it all in one go (headache be damned).

This is a book that deals with major aspects of Bubi Hartmann's life with several epitomizing examples. Eg. Air combat, we get his first sortie (lost his plane), shooting down a Il-2 for his first kill, even fighting and destroying 7 Mustangs at Ploesti as well as taking on 8 Mustangs by himself. There is the love of his life: Ursula, meeting hitler three times (drunk the first time for his Knight's cross), his truly honorable decision at the end of the war, the disgracful behavior of the Russians at the end, the endless decade in the prison camp as a 'war' criminal, refusing to work with or for the Soviets, the the post war years, in particular Bubi's opinion of the f-104 and the mistake the luftwaffe made in adopting it.

What this book is not: a blow-by-blow account of air tactics on the eastern front, though Bubi's style is contrasted with other aces in JG52. His approach is also considered with the 2nd ranked russian aces who adopted a similar style. Nor is it the gulag archipelego (Solzenitsyn) as in an exhuastive coverage of the soviet gulag system. Instead it is balanced work that seeks to pay fair time to the major events in Hartmann's life. Consequently it reads quickly and well.

Often you will find yourself shaking your head at this amazing (and amazingly modest) man and the amazing things he did and survived. His was a life most extraordinary with extremes being the norm. There are also some very touching moments. I personally felt regret when I was finishied reading that I would never get a chance to meet this man.

The tone of the story could be construed at simpering, but I chose to look at it this way: the authors treated Bubi Hartmann's story as one worthy of the utmost respect and this is reflected in their writing style: profoundly respectful of the greatest ace (by 51 Kills!) the world has ever seen, all when he was still 22.

So read it if you are interested in a tale of modern chivalry, bravery, humility and sheer brilliance. And as the author's said: those 352 kills were verified in a system far more stringent than anything the allies used. EVen the soviets knew how many planes the Black Devil as he was known had shot down.

I find the statement 'war hero' somewhat paradoxical. But if there ever was a man worthy of such a title than Bubi Hartmann was that man. Read his story and you'll understand what I mean.

An excellent read

Erich Hartmann is one of the true heroes of WWII. As the highest scoring ace of WWII, and probably forever, he was one of the deadliest pilots the world has ever seen. His score of 352 kills, of which 345 were Soviet aircraft, is absolutely astronomical. Ironically, his war years are not as highly praised as the time he spent in Soviet prison camps. The Soviets were experts at making people crack through mental torture rather than physical torture. Eventually everyone cracked, except for Hartmann. He was thrown in a dark hole (called the "bunker") for days at a time, provided only with water. He once had a period of over six months in the bunker, yet he still refused to work for the Soviets. The sheer will power of Hartmann was enough to resist the torture thrown upon him. It just shows that if you try, you can conquer any barrier.

What a valiant unpretentious warrior he was.

This is the story of an amazingly modest aerial war hero and the unbelievable things he did in combat to survive the war only to end up in a Russian prisoner of war camp for ten years. Allied pilots flew 25 missions, but their German counterparts continued to fly missions until they were killed or the war ended whichever came first. Erich Hartmann's 352 verified kills will never be surpassed. Being a pilot and student of aerial combat, I wish I had a chance to meet this great warrior.

Growing Up with Roy & Dale

Excellent book written by Dusty Rogers, the son of Roy Rogers. His birth mom died a few days after he was born; so Dale Evans actually raised him. He gives a lot of insight to his parents, the love they had for the Lord, and the love they had for family. I highly recommend this book.

I REMEMBER ROY AND DALE

I would never miss a Roy Rogers movie. Every Saturday I took my dime, a nickel for popcorn, and went to the local theater. There I rode the range with Roy, Gabby, Dale and, of course, the Smartest Horse in the Movies. It was a magic time for me, those two hours in the movie house watching all the action.

While I did not know it at the time (I was about 15 or so) I was not only being entertained, but getting a lesson in morality. The good guys were always honest and courteous. The bad guys were alway really bad. But in the end the Bad guys went to the jailhouse for trial and justice.

It was a surprise and a delight to me last May when I discovered that
Roy (Dusty) Rogers, Jr. had a theater in Branson, MO. Also that he had written a book about growing up with Roy and Dale.

His book, Growing up with Roy and Dale, was written in the first person. He was totally honest about himself and his family. He also showed Roy and Dale as loving parents who were not afraid to discipline them when necessary. He and his best friend, and adopted brother, had many adventures.

Of course, I had to go to Branson, MO to see the show. It was great! Roy and his High Riders sang all the songs Dale and Roy sang. It brought back many memories of the Saturdays in the movies, Roy's personal appearance at Forbes Field (Pittsburgh, PA), and at the fair gounds and his many rodeo appearances.

Roy, Jr. and the High Riders put on a great show. In between songs and comedy skits Dusty talked about growing up, he told us some interesting stories of things that happened during that time.

If you liked Roy and Dale you will Love Roy (Dusty), Jr.

I loved this book as I grew up in the old cowboy movie days and my children learned to love Roy and Dale on TV--this book sure brings back great memories and I love it. this is a must read for Roy and Dale fans
