Like it has been said if you don't know anything about digital these books wouldn't be of much use but if you have a basic understanding of digital circuits these books are great to show you how different circuits are put together.

Oldie but Goodie for Inventors

If you read ALL the reviews of ALL seven volumes of Graf's general encyclopedia series, PLUS Graf's 5 "specialty" circuit books (Oscillators, Amplifiers, Detectors, Measuring and Converters), you'll get a noticeable trend: these books are either for very new hobbyists or designers OR very experienced engineers!

Both are actually right, as the series depends on your goals. Since a lot of the info is outdated, it also means a lot is public domain, and you can find some real "gem ideas" that have been forgotten, and with modern component updates, can become the material for a new patent, or components thereof. Circle M's are usually abandoned within 9 years, and didn't even exist back then.

In that vein of advanced scanning, another advanced requirement is the ability to calculate missing values and spot mistakes. Eg. Graf gives a digital power monitor circuit with a missing reset switch and only one (R2) of two resistor values. You can use VSense=r1 + 10K/10K * 2.3, for example, to solve for r1, and use vsense over your VTP, with test values, to get your max voltage.

So, for the newbies, hobbyists and new inventors. Hey, with the right attitude, figuring out the mistakes (without blowing yourself up or burning your garage down) can be a challenge! If you compare circuits with online resources and the awesome McGraw Hill circuit (troubleshooting) series (volume 4 is awesome but very rare and expensive-- had to buy if from India: McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 4), you can become the Sherlock Holmes of the design world with this series! Think of it as a puzzle and you won't get as ticked off as some of this series' reviewers seem to!

I test circuits, especially for law firms and inventors, at payroy dot com, for reference, so my perspective and bias is new as well as experienced inventors. If you're an inventor and combine these series with, for example, Practical Electronics for Inventors, Third Edition, you'll have a wonderful and huge set of resources to compare TO the modern web or even smartphone app circuit resources. They say a chess grandmaster has 50,000 positions memorized, I'm guessing that the best inventors eventually have thousands of circuits in mind too! Learning to judge the bad from the good is what the other reviewers who trash this series know how to do-- but studying both good and bad is a GREAT way to learn the difference, as well as spot undiscovered or forgotten gems. Old isn't always bad!!!

About the Author
Dr. Neil T. Anderson is founder and president emeritus of Freedom in Christ Ministries. He has 20 years of pastoral and teaching experience and was formerly Chariman of the Practical Theology Department at Talbot School of Theology. Neil has authored over twenty best-selling books on Christ-centered living including Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker and Finding Hope Again.Rich Miller is the executive vice president of pryaer and spiritual renewal and also serves as the international director of Break Free! Ministries (Freedom in Christ for young adults). He has coauthored six books, including The Great War: Awesome God; Reality Check; Know Light, No Fear and The Great War. Rich, his wife, Shirley, and their three children live near Atlanta, Georgia.

Fantastic Book. A must for All Youth Leaders!

I've learned more about Youth in the first two chapters than I have in my time working with them. Its taking me a while to read. There is a paragraph, a line, a word to underline or highlight on every page that hits home to our Youth Problem and how to go about solving it. This book is excellent for working with Both Christian and non-Christian Young People. Youth Leaders, get it and read it. The ideas and bible study in it will enhance your work with your Youth!

Definitely my kind of book!

Mr. McComb, if you're reading this, thank you. This book really brought me into the laser forefront. I've been doing circuit analysis/design for about 2 years now (ever since I graduated High School) and this book was my first in-depth exposure to projects dealing in lasers. Since I first read it, I have proceeded to build an exremely large laser show setup, basing some of the simpler functions off your circuits. Just want to say that this is a great platform book! A great place to start for someone in the field of electronics interested in getting into laser systems. BTW, if anyone else is interested in laser shows, gimme and e-mail.

Excellent, do-it-yourself, affordable laser projects.

An excellent well-written, understandable book that contains many surprisingly sophisticated projects; such as a laser seismograph, that can actually be built by the home hobbyist. This book is as useful today (1998) as when it was written. In fact the projects are now even cheaper and more practical to build! My personal favorite electronic project book. usefull small circuits and drawings of power supp of high voltage for lasers,drivers ,optics etc.. a lot of mechanical drawings and optics \lens placement for holografy, and other interesting exp, the book is more cw lasers and not at all pulser solid state , not include eny diode or new solid state power lasers. even i would not call it profesionall or advanced , i still recomand to buy and have this book .

Encouragement in Prayer

I've only just started Quin Sherrer's How To Pray for Your Children but I find it so encouraging. It's easy to stop praying when God doesn't give an instant answer. She reminds us that Satan will try to sabotage your relationship with the person you are praying for. How true.

Please note two different books...

There is some confusion because there are two books with the same title. Bad Girls of the Bible by Barbara Essex is terrific! She uses sound biblical interpretation to help us uncover the "real" story of infamous biblical women. She goes beneath the surface and uses history, archeology and other tools to get at the heart of the women's stories. She doesn't berate them, but helps us see their more positive qualities even though they are being used to move the biblical story forward. This book is fabulous!

GREAT BOOK

I, along with the women from my church, thoroughly enjoyed this book! We learned about women from the Old Testament and gained new insights on familiar ones. We especially appreciated Ms. Essex's "Biblical Interpretative Tools." It was like having a mini seminary class. All of my life I thought that Jezebel was a prostitute or a slut. The term, "You old Jezebel" was the worst term that one could say about a woman. Even though Jezebel was a terribly devious person, Ms. Essex taught us about Jezebel's background and put her story into perspective. We were able to see Jezebel through another lens and discuss how God used her in God's divine plan. The questions in each chapter are also very engaging. I highly recommend this book.

Not Blasphemous, just perspective

Bad Girls of the Bible is a very powerful book. Barbara Essex's writing style is very digestible and easy to read. Her analysis of familiar Bible figures forces the reader to rethink their perception of those people. She dissects 12 very popular and reviled women of the Bible, starting with Eve and ending with Sapphira. Each "Bad Girl" story begins with contextual background of the events surrounding the story. Rev. Essex has an unbelievable grasp of the situations that introduce us to the ladies. If you don't like the conclusions drawn by Essex, it is hard to deny that your understanding of the Bible is improved by this book. The ladies chosen have had pretty "bad" reputations for many, many years. However, some of them have been obvious victims of a male-dominated clergy that has been known to portray women unfavorably. We have heard these stories from preachers in the pulpit for since we were children, without ever questioning them or looking at the scripture. But this book requires you to actually READ the Bible, read the text and go from there.

Rev. Essex makes it a point to humanize each woman and infers some other things that may have been active in the women's lives that led them to this point. Sometimes, she goes out of her way to defend the actions of some (like Herodias), while some we are left wondering about (like the adulterous woman). Certainly, we can all agree that there have been gross mischaracterizations of a lot of women in the Bible. One well known misconception is that of Jezebel. Her name is synonymous with "floozy" or "tramp", but her story is nothing of the kind. She was a queen who was preparing herself for an obvious and predicted death. She was a warrior and defender for her god, Baal. She did the same things to defend her religion as did Elijah, but was on the wrong side of the fight. It's in plain English in the Bible but we all have taken someone else's word for it.

Rev. Essex provides study questions at the end of each section for deeper analysis of each Bad Girl. In my opinion, the best parts of the book were the sections on "Biblical Interpretative Tools" and "Teaching and Preaching Bad Girls of the Bible". The Biblical Interpretative Tools is a very scholarly section that discusses the various traditions and perspectives presented in the Bible. The Elohist, Deuteronomist, Redactor, Priestly, and Yahwist traditions have their own way of seeing God. This must be understood to really get at the root of why these women were portrayed so badly. It also helps the reader understand other stories in the Bible as well. More importantly, Rev. Essex looks at how feminism, patriarchy, and womanism affect Bible stories. The Teaching and Preaching section was eye-opening because it get the ministers ways of presenting these women in a way that they were not "villains or victims". This section is used to help the readers interact with information and how to share it with others.

My church recently used this book (and Bad Boys of the Bible) for a lengthy Bible study. Our Pastor was had 3 different Bible study sessions every week on these books. We are all more fluent in Bible content, from the lifelong church goer to the new member. We looked at the actual scriptures and had very passionate discussions. We may not have agreed with all that Essex had to say (you shouldn't totally agree with any writer), but we had to re-read the stories to see if we could see what she saw in it. We have grown as a congregation because of these books. It was Rev. Essex's defense of the featured women that made us read the scripture, just to see if we missed anything. At the end of the sessions (Bad Boys was 8 weeks and Bad Girls was 12 weeks), opinions ranged from "I never saw that", "That's not what we learned", or "I never knew that". We liked these books so much that we will begin studying another Essex book, Bad Boys of the New Testament, very soon.

Rev. Barbara Essex has written a book that challenges people's knowledge of the Bible. Many people state that they know the Bible but really have only retained what they have heard or what they have been told by someone else. Because of the conclusions she has drawn to defend these women, we as Christians must revisit these stories and we must be sure we know and understand what the scripture says, not our ministers, evangelists, prophets or anyone else. I encourage any Believer to read this book. I suggest the new Believer read this book with clergy guidance or a study group. I advise the longtime Believer to read this book and examine what they have been taught through the years. I personally have stronger faith after experiencing Bad Girls of the Bible.

Comprehensive Approach to Pre Marriage Preparation

Both my wife and myself participated in the "Preparing for Marriage" course by Dennis Rainey. We have since run it for four other young couples with great success. The special projects and couples projects are excellent!

Preparing for Marriage: Counselors Pack

The pack includes a leader's guide and three copies of The Rainey's book Preparing for Marriage. The books themself are chalked full of exercises. There are exercises for the couple, as well as individual projects. I think that the books are a good tool and combined with several other pre-marital material are good for therapy.

If you can read only one missionary story, read this one!

This true story of a missionary couple contains many miracle stories. Your mouth will drop open when you read how they narrowly escaped being captured and eaten by cannibals! They saw many dramatic answers to prayer, including a chief's wife being raised from the dead! Garlock experienced translation just as Phillip did in the Book of Acts! I was reading this book on a cruise ship. It so happened that one of my dinner partners had known and lived with this missionary couple! She could vouch for the truth of these miracle accounts, but she had never seen the book before. I lent it to her to read on the cruise. Years later I was attending a conference, and the author of the book (daughter-in-law of the missionaries) spoke! What a surprise for me! She talked about the book, and I got to meet her afterward. If you can read only one book about missionaries, you should read this one!

My dad read this book aloud to us as children. The story of H.B. Garlock built my faith at a young age. I knew the promises of God are forever and his power is limitless. This book reads a little like the acts of the apostles!

This little book will encourage you.

I read this book in 1981 while in Bible school. I had taken a leave of absence from my job as a police officer for a year and was trying to decide if God wanted me to continue my studies in Bible school or head back to my job. I believed God wanted me to remain in school and study to become a pastor but I was having a hard time leaving my police career and studying for the ministry. God spoke to my heart through this book to the degree that I sent off my letter of resignation and stayed in school. I've been pastoring for 35 years now and I am very grateful for H.B. Garlock's book that encouraged me to obey God. I still have the original book and read it ever so often it always inspires me. You will be blessed by reading it.
