African American Christian Ethics, written by Samuel K. Roberts is a well-written book, with one exception.

I am a religion major who just completed a Christian ethnics course using the book called African American Christian Ethics, by Samuel K. Roberts. The last assignment given by the professor was to write a review on this book. Here goes!

The book starts out strong, clear, and concise, as Roberts begins by stating his purpose of looking for a Christian ethic within the particularity of the African American experience. In the first part of the book he labors, successfully, to lay a foundation that encompasses the history of Africans being brought into America as slaves. He does an excellent job of relating the reason and manner in which Christianity was eventually offered to these slaves, and he identifies the particular way in which Africans were able to identify with the person of Jesus, and make Christianity their own particular religion. Roberts supports his discourse by introducing and tying in the theology of influential black theologians and thinkers, he also supports his work through the use of old Negro Spirituals, and selective Scripture interpretations.

The second part of the book is also well written, continuing basically in the same manner as the first part. Roberts continues to pull in the black theological voices of James Cone, Albert Cleage Jr., Major R. Jones, Gayraud S. Wilmore, and others. He continues to use the Negro Spirituals in this section, and he does an excellent job of discussing in great detail the various African American Christian denominations and how they came into being. It is the last part of the book that falls short, in my opinion. Throughout the first two sections, Roberts laid a foundation that inspired an appreciation within the reader toward the importance of African Americans developing a Christian ethic true to their experience, belief, and identity of God. Yet, in the last part of the book, where one would expect Roberts to pull everything together and clearly present a definitive Christian ethnic that is particular to the African American experience, the book becomes somewhat disappointing. In this section, Roberts abandons the tools that worked so well for him in the previous two sections, namely the black theological voices and the Negro Spirituals. Instead of affirming a specific Christian ethic for African Americans, Roberts chooses to address various issues. As I read this portion of the book I felt that Roberts was falling into the trap many black leaders have fallen into, that being discussing the problems without providing any definitive solution. The course of action he supplied was somewhat liberal, and most definitely inconclusive. I was left still searching for that particular Christian ethic Roberts had convinced me that the African American people needed.

The book is good, worthwhile to any who would like to learn of the particularity of the African American experience. Roberts' research into the history of African Americans, and even the White race as far as how it pertains to slavery is without fault in my opinion. However, if you truly desire to arrive, by the end of the book, at a place of conviction concerning the particular ethic needed for African Americans, I am afraid you will be as disappointed as I was.

Although Richardson asserts that his book offers "an objective yet concise critique of the Koran," only his claim for brevity rings true. Richardson's presentation of Islam is decidedly one-sided; he takes 111 of the Qur'an's "war verses" out of their historical contexts and claims that this selection proves that contemporary Islam is a dangerous and militant faith. (Has he read the Book of Deuteronomy lately?) But apart from the obvious problem of the pot calling the kettle black, Richardson ignores any evidence that contradicts his theory-for example, entirely neglecting to mention the history of the peaceful Moorish occupation of the Iberian peninsula. Richardson resorts to degrading stereotypes about Muslims, depicting Muhammad, for example, as a sex-crazed, vengeful and avaricious charlatan. The chapters are filled with unproven hyperbole, shrill writing, and a polemical tone, whether Richardson is railing against moderate scholars such as Karen Armstrong and John Esposito or attacking the news coverage of Newsweek and PBS. ("PBS," curses Richardson, "may the fleas from a thousand camels infest your armpits for foisting this travesty of a documentary upon us!") Overall, Richardson's sensationalized attempt to unveil the so-called "secrets" of Islam preys upon fear and perpetuates half-truths.

About the Author
DON RICHARDSON, author of Peace Child, Lords of the Earth and Eternity in Their Hearts, has been studying the Muslim world for over 30 years. He and his wife, Carol, spent 15 years among the Sawi, a Stone Age tribe of Irian Jaya. Don designed an alphabet suited to the Sawi language, authored 19 primers, taught the tribesmen to read in their native tongue and translated the entire New Testament. More than half of the Sawi accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Since 1977, Don has served as ambassador-at-Large for World Team, a mission organization. Don, holds an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Biola University in La Mirada, CA, is an ordained pastor and speaks at more than 40 church conferences each year.

A handy resource that would be even better without the sarcasm

Richardson's volume is a handy resource for those who have no knowledge about Mohammed, the Koran, or the founding of Islam. It is hardly a comprehensive history, but the author doesn't claim it to be so; in fact, what he wants is for readers to consult other resources (and he lists many suggested resources) and to test the veracity of the claims found in his book. Richardson himself consulted seven different English translations of the Koran: some by Muslims, some by non-Muslims, some by objective translators, and some by Islamic apologists. I know that Muslims claim the Koran can only be read, understood, and appreciated in Arabic, but this claim is absurd. Certainly there are always certain nuances that are lost when a book is translated from one language into another, but the meaning can be clearly retained. If the Koran doesn't make sense in English it is because, as Richardson points out, it doesn't make much sense in Arabic either.

For the uninformed, who have been bamboozled by the liberal media into believing that Islam is a "peaceful religion," this should be a great wake-up call. The silence of so-called moderate Muslims every time that there is a terrorist attack by radicals is a clear indicator of the validity of many of Richardson's arguments concerning the history and ultimate goals of those who follow Islam. The fact that Muslims resort to emotional blackmail every time that they are offended by "the West" also supports much of what Richardson has to say in terms of the differences between Christianity and Islam and the threat that the latter poses to the civilization of the former. When Muslims are offended, whether by comments from the pope or Danish cartoons, they riot and threaten to kill (a threat on which some follow through). When Christians are offended by blasphemies such as those found in "The Da Vinci Code", they attempt to engage in intelligent dialogue (as is evidenced by the many books and video programs that addressed the claims found in Dan Brown's novel). There is obviously a great difference in the two approaches, and it is unfortunate that the Muslim approach seems to be the more effective one right now (witness the pope's current trip to Turkey, which is an obvious attempt to calm Muslim opinion about his previous comments on Islam).

The only problem with Richardson's book, as I see it, is his often sarcastic tone. He makes his points quite clearly, so I see no need for him to add so many sarcastic commentaries at the end of many points. I think the sarcasm is more likely to create a spirit of hostility toward Muslims. While Richardson obviously is issuing a warning to Western Civilization that if we don't start to defend and protect our Christian heritage then we will lose it, I don't think he is trying to stir up antagonism against Muslims. Since he is a man of God, I know that he desires the gospel of Jesus Christ to be spread throughout the Islamic world. The trouble with accomplishing that, however, is also highlighted in Richardson's book.

The bottom line, as Richardson makes clear, is that true Christians should attempt to reach Muslims with the gospel of Christ, but that they should also take steps to defend themselves by calling on their leaders to stop allowing Islam to influence public policy through its methods of fear and intimidation through violence (terrorism), emotional blackmail (the "we're offended, so let's riot" attitude mentioned previously), and flat-out lies about the so-called 'truths' found in the Koran.

Islam Revealed

Richardson's book is on target in explaining the Koran and is helpful by using different versions. It is an extremely well researched (like his book "Eternity in their hearts") and gives a concise history and ideology of Islam. Although some say Islam is a peaceful religion, the organizer has the history of killing, enslaving and being what many today call a pedophile. It goes to show that people who study and live out Mohammed's complete teachings are a threat to civilization. Muslims who take it lightly are no threat, although they give the Koran an endorsement for the ignorant. Of course, many Christians don't study and live out the bible which makes another paradox of hearers of the words verses doers. Out of other books that I have read on the subject, this is a must read.

Key content is corroborated by books written by FORMER MUSLIMS

I was a bit unhappy with the tone in some parts of this book, which doubtless irritated other readers as well. However, tone aside, prominent negative facts about the Koran in general and Mohammed specifically agree with other analyses I have read -- including at least three books written by FORMER MUSLIMS. One of the former Muslim authors -- Mark Gabriel (not his original Muslim name) -- was formerly an imam at a mosque and professor of Islamic history at Islam's most pretigious university: Al-Azhar University in Cairo.

Sadly, present Muslims are strongly discouraged from criticizing the Koran, Mohammed, and Islam in general -- under threat of death in many cases. After simply expressing some doubts about the Koran in an Al-Azhar faculty meeting, Mark Gabriel was subjected to tortures that would have killed him outside of miracles. (The secret police who perpetrated the tortures were duly impressed with his survival and let him go!) Therefore, it is unsurprising that few, if any, presently-Muslim authors dare to author works that expose the raw facts.

Even more sadly, post-modern, politically-correct folks that dominate the media are disinterested in the facts. Karen Armstrong, whom Richardson criticizes in his book, is one. I recall an unrelated book by Armstrong that expresses opinions about Christ that are totally at odds with the facts. Another author, Dan Brown(The DeVinci Code), simply lies about his content.

In summary, I think we need give "Secrets of the Koran" a fair hearing, ignoring not only the tone of his book but moreover the rantings of detractors who have no interest in the truth.

Heavens not so cloudy after all!

Heaven is real.

Wow, finally a factual book about heaven,told in a Novel form. I liked that I could go along with the story line, enjoying it, while learning truths about the "heaven" I learned about in childrens Sunday school. Only as an adult I hadn't been able to add much more to my understanding of it. Believe me there is much more to it than you & I learned in Sunday School. I can grab hold of and hang on to these truths. It would be a great gift-- i gave 6 copies for Christmas.

One Flaw

The biggest flaw in this book is that Brown does not deal with the fact that Ancient Israel and Second Temple Judaism believed in a three level universe. Biblical authors thought the earth was the center of the universe (and probably thought the world was flat) and Brown based all of his theology on those ancient concepts.

Van Wormer skillfully explores issues such as the biolo\ gy of alcoholism, actual family dynamics, history, special groups, treatment ph\ ilosophies, etc. Another level is that of the advanced addictions workers who \ is ready to question rather than just absorb. The author sets the pace of care\ fully challenging some conventional assumptions of the field, as in her incorpo\ ration of the ecological perspective, her discussion of damage to sperm in rela\ tion to drug/alcohol-related birth defects, her critique of the idea of "codep\ endency," her exploration of treatment services for women and her overall rejec\ tion of the simplistic thinking about addictions that was characteristic of bot\ h the First and Second Waves. Another level is that of the specialty student. \ Van Wormer examines many interesting specialty themes, whether that of ethnici\ ty and addictions, or that physiology of addictions, or the analysis of the ex\ istence of addictions work in the macroculture (a theme which pervades the book\ ). -- Marguerite Babcock, Center for Substance Abuse, Mckeesport, Pennsylvania

She takes a needed holistic approach to alcoholism treatment that considers the biolgical, psychological, social, and sprititual contexts. About the Author
Dr. Katherine van Wormer has taught in departments of social work and criminal justice at the University of Northern Iowa and has over twenty years of experience in teaching and public service. Dr. van Wormer was actively involved in civil rights movements in North Carolina and Northern Ireland. She has practiced substance abuse counseling for four and a half years, including two in Norway. Dr. van Wormer has been publishing texts, book chapters, and articles for over twenty years. In addition to ADDICTION TREATMENT: A STRENGTHS PERSPECTIVE, she has published INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WELFARE AND SOCIAL WORK: THE U.S. IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE and seven other books, including two on female offenders and victims and one on the nature of oppression. She has received several honors, including the McKay Faculty Research Award from the University of Northern Iowa.

Hemos oído hablar mucho acerca del Espíritu Santo,incluso hasta hemos predicado o ensenado de El,sabemos quien es y de todo lo que es capaz de hacer,sabemos los textos de la biblia que hablan acerca de El,pero si somos sinceros nos haríamos la siguiente pregunta conozco realmente al Espíritu Santo?,mi vida refleja su existencia en mi? de no ser así te recomiendo sinceramente este libro escrito por el pastor Jim cmbala,te motivara a buscar la Presencia de Dios a través del Espíritu Santo.

Excellent book for someone with aptitude and some experience

This is an excellent book all the way through. Great diagrams and explanations on how to repair most small engines. Well written and very useful to the DIY repairman.

However,

If you're looking for a book that shows you how to change a spark plug, this is not the book for you. There are much better books out there for beginners and light tinkerers.

This book assumes that not only are you mechanically proficient and have the tools to repair it yourself but also posess a basic understanding of how small engine mechanisms work already or can figure it out without too much effort.

Not to say the average homeowner won't find it useful, but the author doesn't go in-depth or hold your hand through what should be moderately simple procedures for someone with basic experience in mechanical repair.

That's what makes this either a good book or a bad book. If you know or can stumble your way around engines, this is a great book that gives you the information you need to properly repair many different models and makes.

If you're someone whose lawnmower broke down last weekend and you thought it might be fun to fix it yourself but you don't have a lot of tools or experience on repairing engines then there are probably some better books out there.

I like this book simply because the author doesn't waste any time (or paper) explaining things that you should already know. Think of it like Small Engine Repair 201 instead of Small Engine Repair 101.

I'll probably hang onto this book for as long as I have small gas engines I may need to repair since it makes such a great reference book.

This book is very in-depth. From beginning to end it describes types of engines, troubleshooting,and individual engine components or systems. The book is certainly not a book for someone that does not already have a working knowledge of engines. The tech information and drawings are very confusing. There is little doubt that Mr. Dempsey knows all about engine repair. It is not a book for the average person that wants to learn to repair a lawn mower. If the author's intention was to provide a teaching text--in my opinion, he missed the mark.

Great little book on small engines

I read this book thirty years ago and it was surprisingly readable, informative, and full of useful practical and technical details. The engines discussed are small, only a few horsepower or less, but they nevertheless have a lot in common with their much bigger counterparts. I actually used the book as a primer before reading books on the more complex automotive engines, and for that purpose it served very well. This was an excellent primer on the subject and it's still worth picking up a used copy now that it's been out of print for some years.
