One of the best books for survivors

I am a survivor of ritual abuse and have been searching for books and resources to help me complete my healing. It is extremely difficult to heal from ritual abuse because it is so painful and there are few therapist who truly understand how to guide your healing. This book is one of the best and most uplifting of all the books I have read about the process of healing in a way that empowers you and frees you from the fear and pain. It has many helpful and uplifting suggestions to bring more 'light' in your life too like building a garden of courage. As a survivor I highly recommend this book to other survivors healing from ritual abuse. Unfortunately, the wonderful book, "Safe Passages to Healing" by Chrystine Oskana is out of print. I found a used copy and it is also one of THE best for therapists and survivors.
I am very grateful to the author of this book. It gave me wonderful ideas of how to use my own creativity to help me heal and overcome. Chrystine Oskana wrote that a survivor needs the 3 C's: Courage, Creativity and Commitment. This book certainly follows in this tradition and also gives very important information to help dispel the lies and the programming from the cults.
With the guidance of this book, I finally feel I can heal, overcome and build a newer and better life. I can finally learn to live free.

For the Healing trail

As one who has experienced Ritual abuse, I found this book to be most helpful in understanding my questions and feelings that have been traveling through my mind. I found many of the exercises in the book to be practical and was thankful that the author put warning notations on sections that could potentially be unsafe for those of us in various stages of our healing process. This is a great book for anyone who is starting out on that healing trail.

Excellent guide for survivors of ritual abuse

This is an excellent guide for survivors of ritual abuse. It is gentle and understanding, and would be particularly helpful for survivors who have only recently started to remember their past and those who need to be careful about reading anything that might accidentally trigger a memory. It has just enough information about ritual abuse to make it somewhat less mystifying, but doesn't have any horrifying details. Instead, it concentrates on useful coping strategies. The suggestions on how to cope with the multiple personality disorder that frequently accompanies ritual abuse are the most helpful I've read.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

If you are looking for a book to help teach children between the ages of 6 to 12 about bible celebrations and holidays this is it! This is book is great. There are 30 lessons. These are easy to use and follow and are broken down into sections. Each celebration or holiday has a bible story reference and a bible verse to memorize. I especially liked the box labeled "Focus" that gives the emphasized point of the lesson. The crafts and object lessons are easily adaptable for this broad age range and will be enjoyable for the kids.

General evaluation of Warfare Prayer

1. Is this an in depth presentation?

This book is a ground breaking study on territorial principalities and power and how to engage in spiritual warfare against them. Dr. Wagner draws from many real life examples, but readily admits that we have only begun scratching the surface and that a lot more study and maturing is necessary with regards to the understanding of strategic level warfare principles.

2. Did I agree with the way that the author interprets scripture?

In many instances in the book the author points out that one of the primary objections against strategic level warfare is that there is no specific mandate in the bible that it should be done. This has also been my primary concern with regards to strategic level warfare. The author devotes a large section of his book addressing this issue. In Chapter 5 (Territoriality then and now) the author argues that throughout the old and new testament it was taken for granted that certain spirits ruled over certain geographical areas. He uses many scriptural references in the hope that together they will form a coherent picture. Though difficult for our post-modern minds to accept I do agree with Dr. Wagner. The next question that automatically follows after accepting the fact that there are spirits assigned to territories is: "Do we have the authority to come against them?" Once again Dr. Wagner makes a very convincing case that God is raising up certain people to do exactly that in Chapter 7.

3. Was there any new information?

This book was almost entirely new information to me. The most useful information in this book is that which is presented in chapters 6, 9 and 10. In chapter 6 the author gives the preconditions of a Christian who wants to get involved in strategic level warfare. They are:

* Submitting to God - seeing him as Lord.

* Drawing near to God - having a vital prayer life.

* Cleansing our hands and our hearts - living holy lives (though we do not have to be perfect).

In chapter 9 the author gives 6 rules for taking a city for Christ. They are:

* Identifying an appropriate are (well boundaried and not to large)

* Getting the pastors of that area to stand in unity and regularly pray for the area.

* Getting the entire body of Christ involved (not just the Charismatics or Pentocostals)

* Prepare spiritually as described in Chapter 6.

* Prepare strategically by researching the area in terms of past history, sins of the people in that area and also by using the spiritual gift of discernment.

* Involve intercessors that have been gifted to do battle on this level of warfare.

In chapter 10 the author gives a list of potential pitfalls to be avoided:

* Being ignorant of the concept of spiritual warfare or the danger involved in spiritual warfare

* Being fearful of the enemy.

* Underestimating the enemy.

* Overestimating yourself and being arrogant in spiritual warfare.

* Not being covered in prayer by fellow warriors.

* Not waiting on God and not being guided by Him in warfare prayer.

* Being impatient and running ahead of God's timing.

4. What impact did the book have on me?

The book inspired me to seek God for an increase in personal holiness. It also made me think of the spiritual powers assigned to my own life and my family in general. It has inspired me to pray for discernment for knowing what they are and guidance in praying against them.

Necessary for warfare prayer

My interest has come to be warfare prayer in many areas. I use it in the areas of prayer for: elders and ministers, petitions, personal and many others. I have found this book to be extremely useful for this. It gives you not only basic help for how to do this type of prayer, it also gives you Scriptural backing for why. It also underscores how important prayer is in the life of the Christian. The book also gives some guidelines on how to do warfare prayer, if you should be doing warfare and other such topics. I would recommend this book for anyone that is interested in doing warfare prayer and would also recommend it to congregations as a tool for having warfare prayer as part of their prayer ministry.

Excellent lectionary resource

One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).
This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.
An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are photos by Paul Chesley, David Austen and Dennis Oda;excerpts from Robert A. Raines and Jospeh Wood Krutch; poetry by Dom Helder Camara and Thomas John Carlisle; and a detail from art by Naul Ojeda.
Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

This, and it's companion volumes, are more than art books. They offer artistic interpretation to the Scriptures that will inform and deepen the preacher's sermons and inspire worship leaders. Both books confirm my belief that artists can be some of the best exegetes of Scripture. Congratulations to Grant Spradling, Jann Cather Weaver, Sharon Iverson Gouwens, Catherine O'Callaghan, and Kenneth T. Lawrence on three stunning, beautiful works.

Gives great perspective into dream interpretation

This book helps me take the dreams that I have which are unique and try to interpret them in a Godly way, the way it was interpreted in the Bible. Teaches you that symbolism in the dreams are important because they say more than words of any language can interpret. Kind of the way God talks to us, with an impression in our hearts. Each symbol is different to everyone as somethings have different meaning depending on the person experiencing it. Very Good Book, nicely written and easy to understand, highly recommended,

Estudiar y enseñar la Biblia es el proyecto más emocionante, desafiante, transformador que un líder puede emprender junto a los jóvenes. Lo serio no debe dejarse para los académicos; y lo creativo no debe ser sin contenido.

Este material es indispensable para entender el texto y explicarlo a los jóvenes de manera relevante.

Es un recurso de mucho valor. Lo utilizo en mi curso de Pedagogía Bíblica en el Instituto Especialidades Juveniles, junto a "Hermenéutica: entendiendo la Palabra de Dios" de Duvall y Hays, y "Hermenéutica: interpretación eficaz hoy" de Haskell.

This is a wonderful book. Informative, and easy to use.

This book gives craft ideas for preschool to 6th grade. It shows in clear, well-illustrated text how to make various Bible crafts so the children can better understand Bible time life-styles and customs.
It is NOT a book of crafts to illustrate Bible stories...It is not about glueing cotton on pictures of sheep, making doorknob hangers, etc.
It DOES INCLUDE how to make simple Bible-style clothing, jewelry, instruments, baskets, bowls, etc. The materials used are simple to find - and if not exactly replicating materials, are certainly reasonably realistic.
Each project lists the required materials, how to prepare to do the project, step-by-step instructions with how long it will take to make, an applicable Bible verse, and information about how the object was used in Bible times.
There is a smaller section with coloring book type pictures that you are free to reproduce. There are small reproducable awards and puppets patterns sections, too.

Craft quality is excellent, really take you back to Bible Times. Start out making the clothing and then add jewelry (signet ring especially neat), musical instruments, variety of writing materials, baskets, mats, pots, money pouch, mud bricks and more. Each craft is associated with a Bible verse; however, crafts don't stand on their own as a Sunday School lesson, will need supplemental material. Or use this book to supplement another Bible Times curriculum.

Randi J. Walker is associate professor of church history at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, and an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She is the author of Emma Newman: A Frontier Woman Minister (2000) and Protestatism in the Sangre de Cristos: 1850-1920 (1991).

Much Ado about Something

I enjoyed Ms. Walker's treatment, especially the synthesis of historic strands contributing to the present United Church of Christ. However, I would have appreciated a slightly more succinct presentation. While each new chapter's review of previous chapters was helpful, it seemed a bit excessive. It was not always easy to discern the conclusion of each chapter - sometimes, one was left with the impression that the end was near, only to have the text take off again for another twenty pages. However, generally I found Ms. Walker's book fascinating and helpful. Most UCC-ers will enjoy her work and learn from it.

An excellent overview

Randi Walker gives an excellent overview of the present United Church of Christ and it's evolution over the past fifty years. She grasps how the apparently disparate groups forming the UCC have come together to create the present "heady mix" that is the United Church of Christ. In light of the 2007 Golden Anniversary of the Uniting Synod, this book should be studied in every UCC congregation and polity class in the nation.

The best we have to date!

Following in the line of several who have attempted to give a comprehensive review of UCC history, this effort carries the process one step further, not only bringing that history up to date, but seeking to show what makes the United Church of Christ distinctive. This, according to the reviewer who is lifelong UCC, is accomplished in sterling fashion -- drawing attention to present challenges, but also underlining enduring strengths. This is a must for those interested in "deciphering the code" of the denomination.
