About the Author
Andrea Saltzman is an attorney in California, specializing in the representation of public agencies in appellate matters. She began her legal career in 1973, working in poverty law and representing welfare recipients, public housing residents, juveniles, and the mentally ill, among others. From 1984 to 1989 she was a lecturer at the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, teaching the mandatory course on law for M.S.W. students. She has also taught law as an adjunct professor at the University of California Berkeley School of Law and at the University of Michigan School of Law. She has a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and an M.A (Sociology) and J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

David M. Furman is an experienced appellate judge serving on the Colorado Court of Appeals and a former magistrate of the Denver Juvenile and District Courts. Judge Furman has presided over a broad range of cases and has authored published and non-published appellate opinions that influence social work practice. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he had extensive litigation experience in child welfare and criminal law cases, including serving as a Deputy Public Defender in the appellate division of the Colorado Public Defender's Office. He taught law and policy courses at Denver University's Graduate School of Social Work and at Colorado Christian University, and currently provides multidisciplinary training to persons who work in the child welfare field, including judicial officers, city and county attorneys, social workers, and respondent parent counsel. Judge Furman serves on the Executive Committee of the Colorado Court Improvement Program (CIP) and Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues. He received a Governor's Citation for his work on a state task force on child welfare. He holds a B.A. degree in psychology and education from Wheaton College, and J.D. and M.S.W. degrees from the University of Denver. In 2011, the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work recognized him as one of the top 50 most influential graduates.

VERY IMPORTANT BOOK

As an attorney who works with social workers on a routine basis, it is clear that professional social workers, students and others who care about the essential link between law and social work will derive substantial benefit from this solid, basic resource. The authors' strong professional credentials and ability to write insightfully and succinctly provide the reader with a multitude of valuable information and practical tips toward pursuing social work practice with added effectiveness and efficiency.

Many times I hated not just this book

The course was hard. Many times I hated not just this book, but life itself. Ripping the hair off my arm seemed more merciful. Frankly this course should be used as a CIA torture device. Or a way to drive people insane. It really is that awful. Unless you are deviant who enjoys intricate things with no right answers just for the sake of fun debate. Blah ha ha.

Either way, don't expect any book on this topic to be a dummy's guide. Stay at a Holiday Inn express. Maybe you'll understand it. This book is likely as good as it's gonna get to simplify this course. My book had about a thousand post its with notes. Why? Well you know the image of a dead horse? Yeah they beat it INTO the ground making explanations. And when you're doing, you're wondering where the day went. I can almost speed read and twenty pages took me two days. That's about a chapter. Why? Well I'd read an except, eat massive chocolates, roam the house like a prison, banged my head, dreamed with my eyes open....

Still, the authors tried. One book. One course... You haven't learned a thing. But you can sit and listen to professors have a discussion and understand 10%. You can read a scholarly article and say, hey, I recall that word. I don't know how the heck they did the math, but I know they have nifty computers to do that quantitative research. Hahahahahaha.

Read it anyway. If you decide you want a DSW, you'll do research til you croak. Or if you desperately want an answer to some complex puzzle, you'll have to align with a senior social worker and do this. You'll only learn this by doing. And even then, a lifetime of doing and you won't perfect it. But you gotta start somewhere.

So yes, I hated this book, mainly because the work was just impossibly hard. But that wasn't the books fault. That was the fault of my hard head, exhaustion and difficult concepts. Now that I'm on the other side, I'll hide the book awhile, forget the agony of it, and enjoy reading scholarly articles with more insight and a frame of reference. I can't judge the authors on the material, only their take on it, and it wasn't bad. I don't know anything about anything still, but I can pretend as if I had stayed at the holiday inn express.

From the Author
I began writing this manuscript as a result of the many phone calls and emails I received as a result of word-of-mouth news of the 'miraculous' turnaround of our dying urban church--a church located in the very skeptical, educated, religion-averse heart of Millenial-dwelling greater Boston. Everyone wanted to know, "what is the one thing you did to turn the church around?" It wasn't one thing, I told them, it was 200 things.
 
I wrote the 200 things down as an exercise in making the strategies that we successfully used in our progressive Christian church universally available, because I only have time for so many coffees with people looking for answers and practical solutions. I love Jesus, and I love His (mainline, moderate and progressive) churches, and know that while many of our churches will and perhaps should die, many others can survive the rapid and radical cultural shifts of the 21st century if they have the right leadership and take the right steps.
 
The book is, obviously, born out of intensive personal and professional experience, over the last 10 years of my tenure at First Church Somerville UCC--initially as a part-time solo pastor of a church with a $50,000 deficit, now a full-time senior minister with a staff of 11, including a full-time associate pastor, a budget of nearly $400,000, a newly renovated building--and most importantly, a whole lot of people who know that God is Real and God is Good, and know how to share that news with others.
 

About the Author
Molly Baskette is, in no particular order, a mother, spouse, recovering workaholic, cancer survivor, adventurous home cook. And oh right: she's also the lead pastor of the quirky, loveable, burgeoning community of First Church Somerville UCC in Somerville, MA, recently dubbed the hippest city in America. She is a regular contributor to the United Church of Christ's Feed Your Spirit site, including the UCC Daily Devotionals, and the author of Remembering My Grandparent and Remembering My Pet, two practical grief books for children.

Coming back from not-so-dead.

It's a lively, easy-to-read book with lots of good ideas for doing church in this day. However, her definition of coming back from "the Dead" is much different than mine. A church with some savings, with young adults able and willing to work on missions and inviting people, willing to come to small group studies, with children in Sunday school, with progressive theology, and able to embrace new technology, new worship, and new ideas, is far from dead! if I were serving a church that could get up to that level, I would be very happy and would not be calling it "dead"!

Our church board used Real Good Church as the basis of our January retreat. It’s well-written, engaging, positive, and encouraging. We found it very useful in helping us see ourselves, our habits, and our buildings in new ways and for making practical, specific decisions about where to put our focus for this year, from putting new signage in our building to creating new ways to be together more often. We appreciate the ways Baskette deals with resistance to change, uses of up-to-date technology, the reality of limits, and the avoidance of “swirly talk.” Above all, though, this book is about creating joy in all we do as a community of progressive Christians!

This book is awesome for anyone interested in becoming a poweful intercessor in the master hands. The writer uses her own experience during prayer sessions. The book will teach you different moves of God through his Spirit in prayer, so that one may not become use to God Spirit operating in the same way. I would recommend reading this book as it will take you into a higher dimension in prayer

Sisters Stand Tall in the Pulpit

I think this book tried to cover alot from a variety of vantage points. It uses scripture, gives historical biographies, contains survey and interview data, discusses leadership theory and lists African American women pastors. I skimmed it once and then read it. It is a book that you could go to many times and still go back to again. I think it is a good reference tool because it has a very rich bibliography. The comparisons and contrasts of men and women's leadership styles in general, feminist and womanish theory as well as the cultural setting for African American women to exercise leadership in Black churches are described very well.
The need for the 21st Century church to recognize the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the daugthers as well as the sons to speak for God is expressed clearly. The writer is also forthright in stating the fact that African American women who lead as ministers in the contemporary churches are the exceptions. Sister McKenzie shows in her book that the Biblical women leaders of the Old and New Testaments were also the exceptions and uses them as role models for women pastoral leaders today.

Interesting, Insightful & intriguing

Dr. McKenzie puts forth a wealth of information on the historical and present struggle of Women in Ministry. It keeps the reader interested and provides depth and insight to the hinderances placed upon women by the ingnorace of our male dominated society. As a Pastor of a local Church, this reading has caused me to remove the walls and replace them with a guide rail and steps that lead women in the Body of Christ towards the true liberty of heaven. A suggested reading for the "Traditional Pulpiteer!"

Carole Lewis chose too narrow a title for her book when she christened it Stop It! Yes, it does offer a lot of good advice on how to control one's appetite, but not just for food; she also talks about other unhealthy appetites, such as pornography, excessive spending, overly emotional behavior, and alcoholism.

Based on a Bob Newhart comedy routine in which he, as a psychiatrist, has only one piece of advice for people who come to him for counseling ("Stop it! Stop doing bad behavior!"), this book is actually that blunt, that simple...and that logical. Lewis says that wishing for changes is silly. One must face the fact that change requires commitment, discipline, goal setting, and confidence. She advises her readers to recite the mantra of "Stop it! Stop it! Stop it some more!" every time they are prone to revert to negative behaviors. They must fight and resist bad habits by forming new behavior patterns. It won't come overnight, but it will come for those who work at it consistently.

Her chapters titles sound like motivational poster sayings, such as "Stop Surviving, Start Thriving" and "Stop Relapsing, Start Resisting." Nevertheless, each chapter offers two important elements for people trying to curb destructive actions: first, there usually is a story or anecdote about someone who was facing a problem, was brought low by it, but then learned how to break free of the bondage of that poor behavior; and second, there are specific actions steps and pieces of advice the reader can follow as a way of learning to control his or her own poor behavior. The chapters share stories of people in the Bible who made poor life decisions, such as King David, and what the negative results were. There are also insights shared by addiction counselors dealing with people facing 21st century challenges.

Carole Lewis is national director of First Place, a weight-loss organization, and her book does not hesitate from time to time to relate stories tied to that business or to give a promotional plug to some of its teachers and directors. I suppose that comes with the territory. But if you don't mind an occasional imbedded commercial, this book really does provide pragmatic, functional advice to Christians and non-Christians who are trying to cope with health issues, emotional traumas, or spiritual matters. -- Dr. Dennis E. Spiritual Solutions for Destructive Addictions

If you have ever prayed to God about loosing weight this Christian approach to dieting may appeal to you. The basic premise of the book is easier said than done and requires a lot of self-control. By saying "STOP IT" each time you act out a destructive behavior you retrain yourself to enjoy healthier habits.

One of the excellent ideas in this book is to focus on the unpleasant results of your negative behavior instead of the instant gratification it will provide. Carole Lewis also encourages you to memorize scripture.

If you feel powerless when you have cravings or eat for emotional reasons then this book has a lot to offer. While it is mostly about weight loss it also deals with negative emotions and things like overspending.

To make this book's ideas even more powerful I'd recommend you print out a big "STOP IT" sign and put it on your refrigerator (to remind you not to overeat) or by your computer (to remind you not to overspend).

While this book provides a very simplistic approach it can work if you take it seriously. You may also want to read: The Divine Diet.

Terrific and Simple

QUIT SABOTAGING YOURSELF AND START LIVING BY CAROLE LEWIS is a quick read with much helpful advice about how to stop bad habits that undermine what you want to do and to be in life, whether it is losing weight, reaching goals, establishing a better business, family relationships, or your prayer life. Her advice is simple and filled with Christian admonitions and Bible verses. Lewis is the national director of First Place.

The holiest books are in small, plain covers!

The ONLY reason this book caught my attention was due to it's thinness amidst the grand and colorful Christian books at my favorite local retail bookstore. Boy, was I shocked after reading only a couple of pages while still standing in the isle of the bookstore. Before I knew it, I purchased this book with my last bit of cash in my purse.
This book is excellent for new Christians, Christians who are struggling with sin, and especially for the unsaved. Every church should have this book, especially those in fields of counseling, psychiatry and healing.
The author, Neil T. Anderson, has a refreshingly concise and clear approach in his writing. He doesn't just use Scriptures as mere footnotes. He states the power of Christ and the enslavement of sin and the reality of Satan. I use the word "state" instead of "preach" because preaching, as it is seen in today's churches, doesn't even begin to touch the power of this book.
Hey, do yourself a favor. Buy this inexpensive, yet valuable book. Once you do, read it and LIVE it!!

It's Really a Magazine, not a Paperbook book.

At first I felt deceived, expecting a paperback book and getting a 23 page quick read Magazine on various steps, some of which I have already seen in Bondage Breakers. I did find it to be a good lesson guide in overcoming things like fear,resentment, etc. but if I had seen this product in person, I would not have selected this out of the other books available by Neil T. Andersen.
