This is a new, revised edition of the 2004 volume that takes into account developments over the last ten years and addresses all reader/reviewer comments. Readers should expect that this controversial topic will draw extreme reader reviews (see the 2004 edition).  The first review here (Jan 28) is typical, written by a Zionist organization which aims to silence any criticism of Israel.  Each of the concerns listed here could be easily addressed and are generally debated in the literature. 

About the Author
Gary M. Burge (PhD, King's College, Aberdeen University) is a professor of New Testament in the Department of Biblical and Theological Studies at Wheaton College and Graduate School, Wheaton, Illinois. Gary has authored a number of books, including Who Are God s People in the Middle East? What Christians Are Not Being Told About Israel and the Palestinians; John and Letters of John in the NIV Application Commentary series; The New Testament in Antiquity (coauthored with Lynn Cohick and Gene Green); and the first three volumes in the Ancient Context, Ancient Faith series, The Bible and the Land and Jesus, the Middle Eastern Storyteller, and Encounters with Jesus. Gary specializes in the Middle East, its churches, and its history in the Hellenistic period.

Eye-opener about the Middle East

This is a book that you will either love or hate depending on your view of Dispensationalism v. Covenant Theology. Here, Burge--a professor at Wheaton College--shows why Zionism is not biblical, as he utilizes history and the Bible to show his point. The Tim LaHayes of the world will wrench their hands in disgust and say that Burge is missing clear evidnece in the Bible regarding the place for the Jews in the end times. Yet many of these hyper-Dispensationalists need to not take their peripheral view of eschatology so seriously. Yes, end times are important, and yes, I think compasion on the Jews is needed. But as Burge points out, what about human rights for everyone? I just finished reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah, and boy, they sure were tough on "God's people" for their sins. I think it is important to show how a person's heritage should not matter since all people are created equal in God's sight, as Paul mentioned in Galatians that there is neither male nor female and neither Jew nor Greek. To classify an entire people as above the moral law and allow their government to persecute another people in the name of biblical presuppositions is immoral and should be condemned. And Burge explains this side very well.

The book does have some weak points. First, I read it in the summer of 2007, and with so much that has taken place over the course of these last four years, is in bad need of an update. This is especially true with Hussein no longer an issue and Iraq's future much different than when this book was first written. Another criticism is that Burge really does make it look like the Palestinians are completely innocent and have not caused many of their own problems. I was in Israel/Egypt 17 years ago during the Infitada and believe that much of the Palestinian strategy was misguided, which only infuriated the general Israeli public against the Palestinians. And what about all of the bombings of innocent people done in Israel by Palestininans? No mention of this is made by Burge.

As far as the "rocks" he mentions being thrown by Palestinian youth, he makes it sound so innocent. Yet I can attest that the rock throwing can be lethal. Driving through Jerusalem, our tour bus was the target of slingshots, shattering windows as we hit the deck to avoid the shattering glass. Walking through the Old Jersualem streets, we had to dodge slingshotted stones and bb's because, obviously, we were American tourists. Gladly, none of the 40 of us--mostly elderly--were ever hurt during the trip, but I think that attempting to hurt other people (was it for retaliation? how would taking out somebody's eye or going through their arm help the cause?) is not the best strategy. Instead of making the Palestinians into saints, I wish Burge would have been a little less biased in his reporting and reported some of the abuses on the other side.

Overall, though, there is good information here that those with a Premil, Pretrib view ought to consider. Every Christian ought to consider these things before pledging allegiance to the nation of Israel, which is not necessarily the friend of human rights or Christianity, for that matter.

Bold, from within Evangelicalism...

Gary Burge has written a book that fills a void that is existent in Evangelical publishing circles.
The book is rightly described as 'bold' because it seeks to challenge many ingrained assumptions Evangelicals hold in regard to the State of Israel. Still, it should be noted that Burge is relatively conservative on the subject when compared to publications of other secular (or non-American Christian) organisations. On a wider spectrum, Burge is far from radical; yet he is a bold voice within the Evangelical arena.
Burge is not an undiscriminating supporter of Palestinian actions, he wishes to place those actions in a context - not an attempt to justify, but an effort to understand. Thus, his conclusions are not based on a parochial interpretation of particular biblical texts; instead, it is an informed theological, missiological, and even pastoral exploration of the realties present in the conflict.
In a roundabout way, the negative reviews of this book can be considered an endorsement - because Burge hopes to challenge assumptions, those who are unwilling to confront their own biases (nor admit that their exegesis of particular biblical texts are merely one interpretation among many, not canon) will retrogress to previously unchallenged premises. Some reviews merely set forth an opinion about the State of Israel rather than an actual rejoinder to the arguments proposed in 'Whose Land, Whose Promise?'. If Burge successfully took an unbiased and non-dehumanising view of both sides of the conflict, his work would inevitably cause discomfort.
This book is well worth reading. This is not to say that one must agree with all of the author's conclusions (Burge is not looking for undifferentiating disciples); 'Whose Land, Whose Promise?' is a welcome partner to the largely one-sided debate existent within Evangelicalism.
For those interested in a Palestinian Christian perspective, the authors Naim Ateek ('Justice and Only Justice') and Mitri Raheb ('I am a Palestinian Christian') are worth a look.

A Missed Attempt

I have to admit, I can't bring myself to finish this book. Although I understand and love the authors attempt at finding a non-biased middle ground, I believe he missed the mark. I think the one piece missing in his understanding is that of fear. Until you have felt the fear of living in Israel I don't believe you can truly understand this conflict. The heart and soul of zionism is not that of a piece of land... its based on survival. The israeli-Palestinian conflict is really a conflict of the survival of the Jewish people. What I am saying is not pro-this or pro-that, but rather the core of the problem. Any Israeli or Jewish person will tell you that in the back of their hearts is a constant fear... this fear is the driving force of politics, social interactions, foreign relations, economic gain, and almost every aspect of life. And above all, this fear is not fabricated. One doesn't have to look far to rationalize it. One of the many examples is the recent statement by the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood (a major contributer in the Egyptian protests) claiming that it was not the destruction of the zionist state that was important, but the genocide of the Israeli and Jewish people... I am not sure how you react to this, but my heart dropped. Imaging being a part of a people group in which all the nations around you, out numbering you ten fold, sought not only the destruction of your self government, but the death and slaughter of you and your family. This is what Mr. Burge is missing. It is impossible to understand this conflict without understanding the history of the Jewish quest for the freedom of life. Although some of the military responses can and should be criticized, the Israeli desire to live peacefully should not. I agree with much of the criticism involving the Israeli military, however, I could never call it aggression. Every war, every bomb, every bullet has not been in an attempt for territorial expansion or for reasons of hate, but for the ability to survive. This is the one unifying basis of the country. As Christian's, our approach should not be pro-israeli or pro-Palestinian but rather should recognize that anti-Semitism/anti-zionism is a hatred that cannot be explained or rationalized. This is the core of the problem and it is the only hope of reconciliation and peace. I found that instead of promoting reconciliation this book promoted a larger spread of hatred (although I don't believe this was the intention). No peace agreement, treaty, or land settlement will be effective until this hatred and fear have first been resolved. I hope I haven't come off as biased. This is a difficult truth to put to words, especially written words.

Fantastic!! Definitely worth the purchase!

I bought this for my oldest son who is 10 (going on 17) This series was recommended to me through Dr Dobson's book, The Strong Willed Child. The C.D.'s have a total of 8 topics (including one introduction for the parents only). We used this as our puberty talk in our 5th grade class.

CD 1: Was an overview of how to use the series along with some tips on how to handle and approach the topics. I found this particular CD a little drawn out, but past that the remaining ones were phenomenal.

CD 2: Canyon of Inferiority was awesome. I recommend this for every child around the age 9-10. Dr Dobson explains self image, and self worth in a down to earth easy to understand method that appeals to both child and adult. He goes on to explain how this phase in young peoples life can effect their esteem and good tips to prepare for the bumps ahead. I think this was both helpful as a preventative measure as well as a healing balm for those who have ever experienced teasing and bullying among their peers. It covers a topic that isn't often discussed during adolescent years, although it definitely should. If nothing else came in this series this one disc would absolutely worth the purchase.

CD 3: Conformity in Adolescence- This topic covered peer pressure and breaks down the control that wanting to be "excepted" and "fit in" can hold on us. With again great tips on how to navigate the path to come, and a clear easy to listen to format that informs our younger generation of what they can expect, why, and tips to handle it.

CD 4:Explanation of Puberty- Was very scientific and technical, Dobson does answer the down and gritty details of Puberty that my son was curious about. It covered all areas: physical, hormonal, and emotional. This topic did go into some great detail. The disc did cover some touchy topics (I'm not sure if I can say it on here) I found the information and methods very helpful, but I highly recommend you listen to this specific CD ahead of time and decide for yourself what you will choose for you family.

All four of the first CD's I found appropriate and suitable for my 10 year old son (as well as older teens). HOWEVER, I have listened to CD five and while accurate and fantastic detail is emphasized on the meaning of love and great advice on growing lasting relationships, it was a bit lengthy and perhaps over his head. I recommend this for age 15 or so (well see when my kids reach that age)

Valuable for parents, pre-teens, teens, and youth ministry workers

Excellent way to prepare your early teen for the emotional, psychological changes and struggles that teens face. Many of the sessions have nothing to do with the typical teen preparation content, so there is a lot of extra value in these sessions. As a parent, I learned a lot about the normal struggle children have with deep and troubling levels of insecurity during these years, the powerful impact of conformity and how to proactively understand and deal with it, and the way teens inaccurately define love. The sessions also provide ways to handle these struggles for both teen and parent. As a Sunday School teacher for junior high students, these sessions were invaluable to me in my ministry to them. I took my daughter away for a one-night bed-and-breakfast mini vacation, during which we listened to these lessons. That get-away was a birthday present, and now 4 years later she still speaks of it being one of the highlights of all her childhood. I personally recommend that parents have their children listen to these when they are 11 years old or early 12. This will help the child to be fully prepared for the onslaught of junior high years and later. Anyone who ministers to young people today should listen to these sessions! Highly recommend it!

About the Author
Dr. Neil T. Anderson is founder and president emeritus of Freedom in Christ Ministries. He has 20 years of pastoral and teaching experience and was formerly Chariman of the Practical Theology Department at Talbot School of Theology. Neil has authored over twenty best-selling books on Christ-centered living including Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker and Finding Hope Again.

Dr. Hal Baumchen is a licensed clinical psychologist with 14 years of counseling experience. He is on pastoral staff at Antioch Christian Fellowship in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He, his wife, Jane, and their two daughters reside in Waconia, Minnesota.

If you are suffering from depression and medication in not helping, read this book. Anderson gives insight into organic causes (versus chemical) to depression and how to overcome it. I wish I had this book 30 years ago!
