Excellent and accurate synopsis

One of several books written on the F-101 in the mid-1980s, Bert Kinsey's Detail & Scale volume stands as one of the two best references available on the Voodoo, the other being the Squadron volume by Drendel and Stevens. The two books are complementary, with Kinsey's volume providing excellent photo coverage of the F-101. Most of the emphasis is on the F-101B since this was the only version in service when the bulk of research and photography for this book would have been conducted. However, the other versions are well-covered, including the poorly-documented reconnaissance conversions for the ANG, the RF-101B and RF-101G/H. The book is particularly notable for two photographs, one of an F-101A with the rarely seen (and still largely classified in the 1980s) Model 96 weapons/fuel pod and a second photo illustrating one of the very early concepts for what would in time become the F-101B.
The only deficiency that I have noted in this book is that a number of the panel lines and other details in the 1/72 drawings for the F-101B do not correspond well with those of the actual aircraft in some cases. The drawings remain extremely useful for both scale modelers and those involved in aircraft conservation, but must be checked closely for any critical work such as accurately locating unit markings and reconciling the drawings with detail photographs. Also, although the book contains photographs (including the cover photo), there is no mention of the early J57-P-53 engine that equipped early per-production models of the F-101B while development was completed of the production-standard "Dash-55" engines.
Overall, Kinsey's book has stood the test of time extremely well and still represents a very valuable resource on the F-101. Even at the high prices for good copies of this book that this reviewer has noted in recent years, for the serious aficionado of the Voodoo, Kinsey's book is worth every penny.

Great reference

Excellent reference book for the F-101! Includes color photos and scale drawings. A must for any modeler building an F-101. This book is getting harder to find due to the fact that it has been out of print since the 1980's.
