About the Author
Rudolf F. Graf has 45 years of engineering, sales, and marketing experience in the electronics field. He has written more than 30 books (about three million copies printed)and well over 100 articles. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a licensed amateur radio operator (KA2CWL), and has a BSEE degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and an MBA from NYU. He is self-employed.

William Sheets is a self-employed circuit design engineer. He has more than 25 years of experience in RF, analog, and digital electronics. He has written numerous articles in electronics publications and co-authored five books with Graf. His interests include amateur radio (K2MQJ), photography, and travel. He has designed and built numerous items, including a satellite TV system, many transmitters and receivers, and a computer. He has an MEE degree from NYU, is married, and lives in up-state New York.

Unbalanced but interesting

Part diatribe against transnational corporations and their related financial markets and part apologia for the inclusion of economics in the social work curriculum, this volume raises far more questions than it answers. The historical interpretation of the rise of capitalism and free market globalization, an interpretation that takes up more than half of the text, cannot be considered a balanced or nuanced view.

For example, the author's preference for Keynesian economic policies over the monetary controls advocated by Friedman is naïve. It has not been informed by serious consideration of Hayek's argument that expansion and contraction of public expenditures (ala Keynes) tends to exacerbate the extremes of economic cycles due to the time lag associated with the expenditures. Contemporary limitations on the measurement of economic indicators and delays in legislative response preclude the possibility that a Keynesian approach is likely to be effective except by accident.

Without exception, every allusion to corporate profit motives is denounced as evil in both intent and consequence. Prigoff seems to dismiss as immaterial the argument that free markets maximize individual choice and autonomy. Community organization and collective action, the primary suggestions to alleviate the negative consequences of globalization, may tend to restrict self-determination without eliminating the potential for power abuse by those who dominate the collective.

Despite these concerns, I found this volume worthwhile. Prigoff's criticism of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund will force me to study international finance more fully, and her continuing refrain that corporations are not held accountable for the environmental costs of their decisions point to the need for change. Finally, I could not agree more with her contention that social workers need to be familiar with economics. All the psychotherapy in the world will prove inadequate if the causal mechanisms fomenting dysfunction are rooted in economic injustices.

Economics for Social Workers--and for all of us!

Perhaps Arline Prigoff's book was written with social workers as the only intended audience, but this well written and researched book should actually be required reading for anyone trying to understand the causes of the problems relating to and the conflict surrounding economic globalization. The book is indeed most timely (as witness the events in Seattle)and its message is powerful.
The text is broken down into five basic sections. First, we have a brief section on current economic and social concerns (directed to social workers as stated by the author, but in fact relevant to all concerned people), and related economic concepts. This is followed by a section on the history of economic theory, from Adam Smith, thru Keynesian concepts, monetarism, and the money culture. Next, Dr. Prigoff provides a section on the establishment of corporate domination over a global economy, from Bretton Woods to the WTO.
The text now moves on to areas that may be new to most readers: Section 4 describes the emergence of an alternative paradigm: sustainable human development, and Section 5 describes appropriate community actions that can be taken to counter globalization's ill effects. All of this is thought-provoking and seems to relate directly to current worldwide economic, and, indeed, political problems. One may or may not agree with all the author seems to endorse, but it clearly deserves consideration, and, in my opinion, much of what she seems to support is hard to disagree with.
This is not a pleasant day or two read: it is a careful (and in some parts painstaking) consideration of the issues, not just for social workers, but for all people concerned with current economic and political problems affecting the masses of people in America and around the world. And, importantly, it does suggest remedies in which each of us could participate.

I read this book because I am in a graduate social work program at the present time. But I found myself wishing that I could provide a copy to every politician in the country. People who make laws need to read this book. Anyone who believes in the future of our country should read this book and go out and try to change things for the better.

About the Author
ELMER TOWNS is Vice President and Dean of the School of Religion at Liberty University, which he co-founded in 1971 with Jerry Falwell. He teaches the 2,000-member pastor’s Sunday School class at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA. Towns is a Gold Medallion Award-winning author and his books include Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough and How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say. Elmer and his wife, Ruth, have three grown children.

SPIRITUALLY TRANSFORMING!

Having been in the church all of my life -- and having heard many folk say: "Let us repeat the 'Lord's Prayer' to open or close many, many meetings left me no longer wanting to hear it again. It always suggested to me people who just did not know how to pray in public. I abhorred their reciting it like a piece of poetry forcing most of the reverence out of it. So rather than participate I would usually opt out of their reciting of it and just pray silently on my own which also did not leaving me feeling any more spiritual! Elmer Towns in this book has completely transformed my thinking about "The Lord's Prayer" and renewed my love of praying it, over and over and over again! His insights into it and spiritual information about it makes this book a treasure for any prayer-seeking, prayer-loving, and prayer-believing Christian. Paige in Richmond

In this book, 'Praying the Lord's Prayer' Dr. Elmer Towns teaches, precept by precept, the focus of his practical means of spiritual formation. Dr. Towns desired a more powerful prayer life and shared his desire with Dr. Yonggi Cho. The rest is history. The Lord's model prayer has been Elmer's principle method of drawing into active and effective prayer. A careful reading of this book also provides great insight into the life of one of our most productive contemporary Christian educators. This book can both challenge and change your prayer life.

I cannot say enough about this book and how it has opened my eyes and heart to the value of the example of prayer that Jesus gave His disciples. Dr. Towns breaks down each phrase of the prayer and gives an in-depth look at each one in relation to God and ourselves. Very much worth a read!

About the Author
C. PETER WAGNER, PhD, holds graduate degrees in theology, missiology, and religion from Fuller Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Southern California. He served as a field missionary in Bolivia for 16 years and he taught on the faculty of the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary for 30 years. The author of 70 books, Wagner ministers extensively nationally and internationally from his home base in Colorado Springs.

Prayer Shield

Prayer Shield covers the topic of personal intercession.. e.g. of those who are commited to pray for and cover an individual (such as a pastor or the leader of a ministry) in prayer. It begins by sharing some true stories of the power of prayer, and also develops what the Bible teaches on the subject of intercession and prayer partners.
The second chapter explores intercessors from every angle.. I feel that one of the most powerful insights in the book is the concept of different types of prayer assignments, and how to determine which type you fit into as an intercessor. E.g., some people specialize in thoroughly praying a request through, and they desire details and feedback and keep prayer lists and prayer journals detailing their requests and how/when God answered them. Others tend to be more prophetic in nature. They find it hard to take requests from people and do not like to keep lists.. they prefer to come before the Lord and get their prayer assignment directly from Him. You need to give lots of details and feedback to those who specialize in praying a request through, but you don't want to bog a prophetic intercessor down with too many specific details and requests. Peter identifies 4 types of intercessors. The book help leaders to determine which prayer-type their intercessors are so they can give them prayer information/requests in a manner that works best for them.
Subsequent chapters develop why pastors and leaders need personal intercession, and how they can begin developing and mobalizing personal intercessors. It teaches leaders how to recieve intercession and how to develop relationship with their intercessors and how to supply them with the information they need to be effctive.
(A personal note.. I used to be one of Peter and Doris Wagner's personal intercessors, and I can attest that they live what they teach in this book.. and as an intercessor, I found their system very workable.)

Seminal Book on Personal Intercession

A seminal book on personal intercession. I've used Prayer Shield as a textbook, and I've sent copies to several ministers to help them initiate prayer support for their own ministry.
The concept of intercession being one of the gifts of the Spirit is ground breaking. Wagner's treatise on the different functions of intercession is vital for any serious prayer ministry.
The bottom line of this book is if a pastor fails in ministry the congregation needs only to look at their amount (or lack) of prayer support to answer the inevitable question of "Why?"

Needed in your arsenal of books

I really enjoy this book and recommend it highly to anyone serious about praying for their leaders. I refer back to the book often and I am reading it again, even now. Mr. Wagner's teachings are clear, easy to understand and learn, as well as, incorporate into my life. The author mentors his students, very well, encouraging them to be all that scripture challenges them to live out, in being a support system to those in any role of leadership. I will continue to give this book to friends as a tool, to be used to become a blessing in the world, as they pray each day.

I am a muscle car lover through and through and this book has all the info a true muscle car guru could ever hope to find. The pictures are well done and I liked the overall style of the book. I hope to find more like it using amazon.com!
