This book is really good for those that have questions about Christianity. Based on the book of Romans, it's emphasis is one the best of Christianity. It is not a book on how to worship correctly (hence the title). I have had great fun using this book in a small group.

Great intro, especially if you are from a religious

background. I read a copy that was printed in the mid-60's a few years ago. I was a brand new born-again christian coming out of a Roman Catholic background. I understand that things are changing in the catholic church, praise God, but at the time,not much was said about God's grace, and this book helped me out of the religious baggage I had brought with me.Don't get me wrong, I am a bible believing christian, a former youth leader for a Foursquare denomination church, and I plan to do missionary work.This book is not about just doing whatever you feel like, but it is a rich, easy to read explanation of the Book of Romans that examines all the religious things that we do to try to please God so he gets off our backs, or so that we can feel superior to others. This book does a great job of going through Romans and examining our relationship with Christ. It is engaging for the intelligent as it covers the concepts in Romans which are God-breathed, and it is written in an easy to read manner. I have lent this book to many different kinds of people and they were all able to receive from it.It is wonderful for those who came from a legalistic christian background who are just begining to know Christ, so that they can know the freedom that is in Christ.

Nice book, a little old

Nice book, well written, simple projects that most people could do. I had hoped for some better quality speaker projects, that did not use Radio Shack speakers. I can get cheap used speakers from Goodwill that are as good or better than the projects in this book. I think that the 1990 book is too old, for anything I would want to build. It is good for a beginner, to get started. Maybe the newer edition will be more helpful, for me.

Excellent lectionary resource

One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).
This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.
An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are poems by Philipp Nicolai with Carl P. Daw Jr, and Alberto Taule; a photo of a cross of the community by the artisans of La Palma, El Salvador; a responsory reading by Miriam Therese Winter; and a painting by Glen Strock.
Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

Thought provoking visuals that go with the Lectionary passages. Pictures are from European fine art and very interesting. It would be good if it came on a CD to be projected for the congregation to see.

C. PETER WAGNER, PhD, holds graduate degrees in theology, missiology, and religion from Fuller Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Southern California. He served as a field missionary in Bolivia for 16 years and he taught on the faculty of the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary for 30 years. The author of 70 books, Wagner ministers extensively nationally and internationally from his home base in Colorado Springs.

Solid Thoughts on this new Movement

This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested understanding the role of Apostle and Prophet. These special offices of the church have been ignored, abused and mostly mis-understood. This is a great book to start a thorough biblical and contemporary study on the topic. C. Peter Wagner's understanding of scripture, expert opinion of Church Growth and personal experience are great resources on this vital topic. It should not be viewed as exhaustive but as the thoughts and understanding of one of the best thinkers in the evangelical church world today

GOOD, BUT STILL AN INSTITUTIONAL MINDSET !

Peter Wagner's "Apostles and Prophets: The Foundation of the Church" is 144 pages long and is divided into 8 chapters. Its main focus is on attempting to understand the proper role of those within the modern day church who function as apostles and prophets.

There are several strengths. First, Dr. Wagner has been a keen observer, commentator, and participant in various shifts and streams in the church for over 50 years and, as such, is bringing to our attention the re-emergence of apostles and prophets in the church today. Second, it is written in a conversational easy-to-read style that will make it accessible to a wider audience. Third, he deals with a number of issues that are important to the topic, such as apostles and prophets in real life, the relationship between apostles and prophets, the needs of apostles, the role of apostles, the history of the re-emergence of this role, scriptural foundations, etc.

A major drawback should be pointed out. There is still an institutional mindset in Wagner's understanding of the role of modern apostles. There is no discussion, as far as I can tell, of the need for a reformation of overall church structure back to a more biblical ecclesiology (i.e. the "house church network" model, Acts 2:41-47, 20:20, Rom 16:3-5, 1 Cor 16:19), so that the role of apostles and prophets can function properly in a healthy and biblical way. In other words, biblical apostles need a biblical church to function within. But, it appears that Wagner's idea is that the new apostles and prophets should just be grafted onto current institutional church systems. If that is done, it becomes easy then for otherwise genuine apostles simply to place themselves overtop of the modern day hierarchical pyramid structures of today's denominations and mission organizations. This can easily result in the abuse of power, unhealthy ambition, and rivalry.

Overall, this is a useful read for anyone interested in the shifts that are taking place within the church, for better or for worse.

Church Politics as Usual

An easy reading for the average believer. I was hoping to find some apostolic missions strategy in it, but disappointingly, the book is about establishing 21st century church government which would be led by newly instituted offices of modern day apostles and prophets. Rather than discussing apostolic missionaries, the book primarily deals with church politics. Aside from naming himself as an example of a modern apostle, his book makes you think about his proposition that the new apostles and prophets are the double-edged sword of the 21st century church hierarchy.
