The Genesis of The Jesus Freaks

Jesus People is essential reading for anyone interested in the Jesus Movement that began in the late 1960's. Jesus People tells the story of the genesis of the Jesus Freak Movement and The Hollywood Free Paper in a straight forward, heartfelt way (a movement that resulted in the Vineyard and Calvary Chapel and countless other churches). The street language of the late 60's and early 70's is appropriate for telling this story as Koine Greek was for telling a similar story 2000 years ago. I was only 13 when I discovered Jesus Freaks in Old Town Los Gatos, California. And just like Duane Pederson describes in his book, one of these Jesus People with long hair and purple velvet bell bottoms walked right up to me and started talking about Jesus in the hippest most appealing way.

There are some nice photographs too. Especially one of Larry Norman, the man someone (one of the guys in DC Talk I believe) called the "Original Jesus Freak."

I did not give Jesus People five stars because I think it is a great work of literature. I gave it five stars because Pederson's active love and respect for the outcasts of the world is obvious on every page. And, in a mere 128 pages, Duane Pederson recreated for me the world of the Jesus People Movement that I remember.

Here I Am To Worship ...

Worship is all about the heart. If we aren't worshipping God with our hearts we are just a band that sings Christian music. I've got to say this book is really good. It was smaller than I thought it would be but it was really good. I'm actually still reading it but I love it. These small little books are packed with so many useful tips and keeping your hearts focus off you and on God. I especially like the section that deals with the church musicians or praise and worship team to be involved in other responsibilities with the local church, not just music. And how we should also make it a point after we are done playing to not have this exclusivity about us, but that we should interact with the others so that they aren't intimidated by us "cool musicians(stuck up)" and we aren't put on pedal stool. It is a really cool book ... and life won't be the same after you read it. Not some huge dramatic change but it causes you to think and see where your motives are. Are you worshipping God or are you trying to bring the attention on yourself. I love the title, "Never Lose the Wonder of Worshipping God". Go out and read it ...!

A WORSHIP GUIDE FOR OLD AND NEW

This is a fantastic book! I was given this book as a fairly new worship leader by a man who was involved in leading worship for many years. It is a quick read and is truly insightful. We all already know about Tim Hughes' powerful song "Here I am to Worship" and this book gets down to talking about just that. What I also love about this book is the praticality of it for worship teams. So many books I've read discuss the condition of the heart which is cruicial to worship; however, Tim's book also talks about the basics of worship teams and leaders such as, drums, sound, finding new band members and so on. I purchased this book for everyone on my worship team for us to read together and within two weeks they were already finished with it. Our drummer has already read it twice. All in all, I've searched multiple times for studies to take the worship team through and just reading this book together has been the most inspiring and insighful.

Brilliant and Exciting!

I first have to say, this book is one of only few books that I can read, listen to music at the same time and still understand the meaning of the book. I do agree with Dawn about Tim's genuineness in writing this book but disagree about his humor. Tim is not THAT funny, but that is not important. This book is for everyONE, of all ages. Whether you're not a worship leader, wanting to be a worship leader, or a current worship leader, this book is right for you. Just because you are musically talented or gifted and singing worship doesn't mean you are doing the right thing. And even if you cannot sing or play an instrument does not mean God cannot use you in His glory. In this book, Tim teaches us to worship God with the Holy Spirit as our worship leader. Hughes even go as far as what we should look for in a band, how to choose a song list and much more. To make my point clear and simple, read the book. You'll be glad you did.

Enlightening for the church context

Do we really know what our spiritual gifts are? That question is at the heart of Peter Wagner's book in which he states that not knowing one's gifts could lead to missing out on God's best plan for one's personal life. He notes that argument for the cessation of spiritual gifts after the apostles departed is an endangered doctrine and more churches have experienced dynamic movement of the spirit since 1900 along with the ministry of all believers since the early 1972. God has designed the church on the model of an organism, which makes spiritual gifts foundational to understanding church organization. The author posits that our identity in the body of Christ is determined to a significant degree by our gifts-mix, which not only reveals our calling, but also glorifies God. Wagner outlines a list of 28 spiritual gifts, their relation to the governmental offices in public ministry, and some common pairings in their performance. He further states that the gifts are given in varying degrees and may be classified in many different ways. Believers must watch out for the pitfalls of having a short list of gifts, a situational view of gifts, gift exaltation, and gift projection. Dr. Weaver is a clinical psychologist and ordained United Methodist minister who has served rural and urban parishes. He has written over 160 scientific articles and book chapters and has co-authored 12 books. Dr. Charlene Hosenfeld is a Presbyterian laywoman and licensed clinical psychologist in Hawaii who has a private practice and also works in a hospital setting. She has more than 24 years of clinical experience and has worked with numerous clients who suffer from addictions. Dr. Koenig is professor of psychiatry and internal medicine, as well as director of the Center for Religion/Spirituality and Health at Duke University Medical Center. He has written over 200 scientific articles and book chapters and has authored or co-authored 30 books.

An amazing soul

I didn't know Me Ra was an author until I met her. She would mention date rape as someone talking about when they first became engaged to their husband: with reverence to a difficult time in her life, but with emotional ease that only someone whom had dealt with great trauma and had overcome could do. To know her in person is to become exceedingly aware that she has no inner demons. That she has gone through great pain, vulnerability, degradation and hardship is true, but she bears no scars. People that have experienced trauma usually have "issues" remaining. To meet her is to become acutely aware that she doesn't have any "issues" because she has dealt with the grief associated with the rape, in all its forms. She is my role model for overcoming, and becoming whole.
When I see her, I can only think to myself of mirroring her restorative process. If she could endure and become well again, then I want to follow the same path she took in my personal emotional healing.
This book is her story. I use it as an example for my life. The One Way is God, and she will show you why. When all others make you question humanity, you're left with nothing to believe in; for humanity can bring much destruction on the individual. God's way is a path of hope and belief, of restoration. Read and discover this for yourself.

This book is about life not just date rape

It is inevitable that everyone encounters obstacles and experiences tragedy in life, after reading this book you realize that the tragedy or obstacle is not what is important but what you do about it. Broken dreams must be restored, we must find hope and strength to fight through hard times and triumph. As you read through this book you experience the writers pain, tragedy, suffering, and most of all triumph and victory. Most people go through life not realizing how powerful certain events can be in shaping their lives by ignoring them and choosing not to face them and resolve them, this book shows a woman who not only faced and resolved a tragic event in her life but how she used it to reach people and give them hope when dealing with tragedy. I suggest that whether you are a woman dealing with date rape or someone that hasn't let go or faced their tragedy and hurt.

A Courageous Story of Hope and Redemption

It is a big step for a Christian publisher to be talking about a subject which has too often been ignored --date rape. This book, which tells of Me Ra's personal story of abuse and restoration, will be healing, informing and encouraging to anyone who has been on either side of sexual abuse. It is also a must-read for anyone planning on being involved in any kind of pastoral ministry (which, in a sense, is every person) --for we see and talk to people everyday who have gone through painful sexual experiences, yet we can hardly imagine how many actually have. While Me Ra's story is intimately tied to her Christian faith, it is accessible to all mature readers. Way to go Me Ra for sharing with us your heart and your story of hope! May this type of courage and vulnerability continue to be shown by Christians.
