Due to its success, it has been revised and updated, and includes a two-part DVD. Part I: "Worship in the Shape of Scripture" shows the author summarizing the book with a live audience and will teach how to understand the structure of worship. Part II: "Bulletins of Common Prayer" is an expansion of chapter 6 and provides a practical, thorough process of preparing bulletins.

About the Author
F. Russell Mitman is the author of three titles from The Pilgrim Press, including Blessed by the Presence of God: Liturgies for Occasional Services (2007) and Immersed in the Splendor of God: Resources for Worship Renewal (2005). He is conference minister of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Marva J. Dawn is a theologian, author, musician, andeducator with Christians Equipped for Ministry, Vancouver, Washington, and Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology atRegent College. A scholar with four masters degrees and aPh.D. in Christian Ethics and the Scriptures from theUniversity of Notre Dame, Dr. Dawn has spoken for clergyand worship conferences and seminaries throughout NorthAmerica and in Madagascar and in Eastern and WesternEurope. She has written many books, most of which arepublished by Eerdmans.

F. Russell Mitman argues for what at first may sound like a more conservative concern within a denomination known for its liberal theological leanings (Mitman was a Conference Minister in the United Church of Christ). He argues that liturgies should be both inspired by the message and organized by the contours of Scripture. While many would agree that the preaching of the Word within a worship service should be about the proclamation of the Gospel, Mitman argues that the entire worship service should proclaim and enact the Word of God so that the "entire liturgical action itself become[s] a proclamatory event" (p. 15).

Mitman borrows a term from the catalogue of musical disciplines and speaks of the liturgiologist's task of interpreting biblical texts for liturgical use as transposition. "Liturgical transposition therefore is an art inasmuch as it employs principles that are more poetic and musical than scientific. It takes a certain liturgical imagination to interpret a text that appears in the Bible in one genre (story, poetry, song, narrative, etc.) and to transpose it in a different genre (unison prayer, responsive dialogue, hymn, statement of faith, etc.)." (p. 59)

As a homiletician seeks to bring out the meaning of the Biblical text through preaching, so the liturgiologist seeks to bring out the meaning of the same text through the liturgy. As she does, the liturgy (as the work of the people) becomes an opportunity for the congregation to act out the meaning of the text through their worship.

How to Be a Christian Without Being Religious: Themes from Romans, Youth Edition

ISBN 0830710264 - Printed in U.S.A. For "youths," though no age range is stated. Paperback, 166 pages. Published by Regal Books, a division of Gospel Light, in 1985. By Fritz Ridenour.

Paul's letters are explained in ways that make their contents relevant to modern young readers. Each chapter ends with a "For further thought" section of questions and things to do and learn to further your knowledge of the bible.

Although this edition was published in 1985, the copyright date is 1967. The reason I even noticed that was a weird thing - the language in this book is more modern and relate-able than the language in Falling Off Cloud Nine and Other High Places (Devotionals for Teens), which I just finished, and which was written in 1981. Clearly, it's not about the time either book was written, but about the author of each work and their ability to speak in a way that will stand up to time (or not). Ridenour's words don't seem outdated at all! Ridenour's version of Christianity is, like Peterson's, mostly of the old-fashioned "love people to Christ" type, rather than the more modern hateful sort. Both authors, oddly, use a "batting 1.000" line. They both are trying to speak to young Christians and, like Peterson's devotionals, the questions/assignments at the end of each section in Ridenour's book engages the reader further. The biggest difference is that Ridenour's book is bluntly honest and straightforward, a style that never goes out of style.

I have two lasting impressions from this book - One, the world might be a far lovelier place if people could take books like this to heart and be Christian but not religious, could worship their god and leave the rest of us alone, could structure their own lives and not try to implement their religious beliefs as law. Two, the "homosexuality is a sin" thing has moved this book from the "I might read that again" shelf to the "well, it'll make good kindling!" pile. That's my personal take.

On another take, however, young Christians who actually believe this stuff will likely enjoy it and I think it will appeal to parents, as well. If you're among those folks, be sure check out Christianish: What If We're Not Really Following Jesus at All?, which is slightly better and has a similar tone without ever giving in to the need to throw gays under the bus. I'd 4-star this book, much to my shock, if it wasn't for the homophobe moment.

Experienced it and still going

My husband and I went through this book before getting married in May of 2004. It was a helpful guide for him to think through what we needed to discuss, be organized in talking through things, and not forget anything major. It was helpful for me to communicate my private thoughts and feelings to my husband-to-be. Today, I am buying this set for my cousin who is proposing at Christmas.

HENRIETTA C. MEARS was one of the great Bible teachers of the 20th century. While Christian Education Director at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, she built one of the largest Sunday Schools in the world and wrote curriculum that was in such high demand that to publish it, she founded Gospel Light in 1933. Such notable Christian leaders as Richard C. Halverson, Luis Evans, Jr. and Bill Bright were among her students. Billy Graham said of Dr. Mears, "Her enthusiasm for the Lord Jesus Christ was contagious."Miss Mears went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 20, 1963.

Inspiring! Youth Ministry Leaders- READ THIS BOOK!!

The Henrietta Mears story is very inspiring. This is a wonderful book for anyone to read who is interested in being an impacting Christian leader. Women, if you are looking for an awesome role model for leadership, look no farther. I am a male, and this is one of the best books Ive ever read. Tells an awesome story about an amazing women.

Great Book! Very comprehensive. Amazing woman.

Just finished this. It's wonderful to read about this godly woman who directly impacted so many women and men--many of who served all over the world as a result of her ministry. An incredible example of leadership, of staying relavant, remaining humble, always pursuing God... Do keep in mind, however, that her wonderful sister took care of all external (household) responsibilities so that Henrietta would be free to follow God's leading in her life. (That's for all of you women who might feel a little guilty after reading it :)) Either way, this book will challenge and inspire both men and women. Highly recommend.

Tremendous Female Biography

Henrietta Mears was a woman who loved the Lord and took Him at His Word. She stepped out in faith and accomplished great things for the glory of Jesus Christ. Even though she is now with Him in heaven, she lives on through her impact on the lives of others and her writings. I highly recommend this well-written biography - you will be challenged by what God can accomplish through one surrendered life!
