A passport to God

I have heard many people in the theological circles mention the name of R.C Sproul, always with an accompanying praise. But I never had the chance to read any of his books until recently when "The character of God" was presented to me as a gift. And what a gift it turned out to be! More of R.C's books will definitely be on my shopping list.

We all speak of God, talk about his role in our lives. The Bible speak about us being created in His image etc.. But very few of us really understand all that God is! Getting to know an infinitely intelligent, all powerful, all knowing, everywhere present creator of everything that is and ever will be is an endeavor of a lifetime, but we ought to start somewhere. This is where this book steps in with confidence.

I think another good name for this book would be "The passport of God" as it is an easy way to learn about the important characteristics of God. Although the subject it handles is immense, this lovely introductory little book (only 170 pages) is not only very well structured but also written in an easy to understand style. The author explains who is this God the Bible talk about, where we can find him, what it means to be an infinite being, does God knows everything there is and what does that mean to us, what it is like to be called Truth, does God change his nature or his mind, how just is God, is he all powerful or is there something he cannot do (for example, can God stop being God, can God lie, can God die...one of the most interesting chapters in my opinion), how loving is God,...

This book is highly recommended: it is light to read but is a heavyweight in the information contained not to mention that it will make you grow intellectually and spiritually!

God is There to be Discovered and Delighted in

This welcome book sheds Biblical light on God's character: Who He is, what He has done for us all through Christ. Afflicts the comfortable and comforts the afflicted. Many great points are made about not taking God 'cafeteria style', picking and choosing which attributes we like or prefer, but taking the Whole God as He is and always will be. He is not just Omni-love or Omnipotent or Omni-immanent; He is not just Omni-holy, Omni-sovereign, Omni-transcendent. The Biblical God is a perfect synthesis of all His attributes, infinitely greater than any human sum of His qualities/character traits. He is, humanly speaking, Omni-Supreme Being - Divine - Trinity - Holy - Love - Powerful - Wise - Merciful - Immanent - Transcendent - Sovereign, ad infinitum. Any other God, especially the recent open theism deity of 'limited foreknowledge, multi-present, quasi-eternal,penultimate, finite-to-limits-of-logic', is not worthy of worship.

Love this book

This book covers a lot more stories than most activity books. There are 52 puzzles for 52 different bible stories, plus 52 puzzles for different memory verses. This book includes a wide variety of puzzles, and the pages look professional. I love this book and use it all the time for teaching middle schoolers.

Thumbs Way Up!

We use this for our Children's Worship Bulletins for ages 8 and up. The puzzles are unique, creative and the difficulty is just right. Rober Mejia's artwork is contemporary and fun. Already, our families are giving me great feedback! I love that each puzzle lesson is not date specific so I can use the puzzle I feel is best for each Sunday. Great job Colleen Kennelly!

Fun activities. Nice for in-church

We now bring these with us when our 7 and 10 year old attend the regular church service, as opposed to sunday school. They are excited to do the activities and are learning names, verses, and simple versions of some bible stories. If you plan it out, you may find a lesson that fits the service's bible lesson, so the kids can better connect to the sermon.

Awesome Reading

This book was required reading for me. I am in a leadership class and this is one of the 12 books that I have had to read. It is very well written and is not overbearing with the authors opinions. I would suggest this book without exception.

Will you take the challenge?

The first line of this book in the Introduction reads, "Our life is God's gift to us. What we make of it is our gift to Him." This is the challenge that Pastor Wayne offers to help us with. If you are up to this challenge, then this is a book you will definitely want to read. In its pages you will find wisdom from God and very practical advice that is presented in a friendly, encouraging and easy to read fashion. I love the fact that Pastor Wayne uses short stories for examples and easy to remember metaphors that you can share with your family. His "principle of margins" to help make life simple is just one example. I think we all need help rising above.

Profound, life-enriching.... read it!,

Having heard the author (Peter Horobbin) speak on this topic, and then read his book I can confidently recommend it. The book is written from practical experience of years ministering to broken lives, and witnessing profound changes in the lives of those who have discovered the truth of the power of forgiveness, even in the midst of indescribeable pain. That said, it's written in a very easy to read style, and can be read in a couple of hours, though the effects can be much more far-reaching!

The central thrust of the book is that we need to forgive - and it takes its lead from the Lord's Prayer 'forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us'. This is hard - many interpretations have been made of this prayer, some which rationalise it or dilute it, but which really have never sat easy, at least with my conscience. Peter does not shy away from accepting the prayer at face-value, and then shows how the outworking of this in practice is actually releasing to those who forgive.

We have all suffered grievances, injustice, hurt and pain, to varying degrees. Peter does not minimise the pain that individuals have suffered or try to rationalise it away. He accepts that there is deep brokenness in the lives of many people (to which the organisation he works for ministers sensitively). However, he points out that unforgiveness breeds anger, bitterness, resentment and even hatred that takes root in us, affecting our lives, who we are, how we relate, how we react and ultimately who we become. Unforgiveness can become a prison, that holds us back from who we are and what we can be. Whilst we might think that others don't deserve forgiveness(and might even be right), forgiveness primarily releases us to be who we are, releases us in relationship to God, to others and even to ourselves. It releases us to live life to the full.

A helpful distinction is made between justice and forgiveness. The book then looks at who has hurt us, and in what ways, starting with parents and those close to us. This is dealt with responsibly, not looking for blame and excuses, but rather facing things that have hurt us, so that we can recognise, forgive and let go. Abuse, feuds, robbery and murder are all considered too. It also points out that we need to forgive ourselves (often the hardest person to forgive?), and not blame God, but that forgiveness can help us overcome behaviours that can 'block' our way to God (anger, hatred, revenge etc). The book then finishes with a a very helpful section on how to practically start working through forgiveness.

The Most Powerful Prayer on Earth may not, and probably will not, solve every problem - and it doesn't seek to do that. However, it provides a key, probably the most vital key, to unlocking issues from the past to enable us to go on - a springboard. It is theology for living out in daily life, and a key to unlocking issues and dealing positively with the past to go on in new life.

This is such a simple, yet profound and life-changing book that can be read in a couple of hours, but will be turned to again and again.

The Most Powerful Prayer on Earth is a 2004 book on Christian spirituality by Peter Horrobin. The aforementioned prayer, Horrobin says, is Jesus's in Luke 23:34: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Here, based on Jesus' model and teaching, Horrobin discusses the need to forgive any and all who have hurt us, whether spiritually, physically, emotionally, or sexually; the freedom that will come from this; and how we can begin the process of forgiveness. Horrobin's theological treatment of this vital but frequently under-emphasized facet of Christian living is generally right on, as is his practical advice. (A note: Horrobin also explicitly ties forgiveness to the physical healing of the forgiver; take that as you will.)

This is a short book with a clear emphasis on readability, and it features some of the presentation issues common to little books of this type. There's Horrobin's overuse of exclamation points, for one thing. There's also the frequent points, repeated verbatim from the text for emphasis, presented in gigantic type, even in mid-sentence.

The Most Powerful Prayer on Earth is a brief but valuable and sufficiently overarching book on forgiveness, and serves well enough as a practical introductory guide to this extremely important subject.

Perfect for undergradutes: the book we have been waiting for

There has been a small boom in publishing about social work values and ethics but I have not been able to find a book appropriate for use in undergraduate courses. I have used cases from other books and placed them on reserve, but not required students to purchase them. This book starts with the Code of Ethics and a chapter on social work principles and then presents a model for ethical decision making. The remaining chapters are on ethical diliemmas in various fields of practice such as child welfare, mental health, and aging. Our department has adopted this book as a requirement for every social work course in the curriculum. Varios chapters will be emphasized in different courses. The cases are interesting and will contribute to a lively discussion.

Elaine needs to update her book to be instep with Social Work Ethics

Though the basic ETHIC model of considering ethical decisions is simple,timeless and the acronym is creative, nothing else about the ETHIC model appears to be innovative or proprietary. Much of the rest of this book is outdated and goes against the Social Work ethic 3.02 (a) of staying current with the information and knowledge of the profession (NASW Code of Ethics). For example the books wastes a bunch of pages on the ethics of faxing information. Certainly an ethical concern, but not one that hasn't been handled both in common procedures in all agencies to protect confidentiality, and legally through HIPPA which is not discussed at any length. Other psych and SW books that offer dissenting opinions on current real life situations would be a much better choice for learning how to handle difficult ethical dilemmas. You can find the ETHIC model in many other places, including online, and there are other more developed models of ethical consideration available. The book is WAY OVERPRICED for what it contains and needs a serious update to be of much value in a quality social work education.

If there isn't a better book to teach Social Work ethics from, there should be. If you are a professor of Social Work ethics, or ethics in general, you should consider writing one.

This is a really great book. It went out of print in this edition. However is is back in print under a new name: 'Hearing God : Developing a Conversational Relationship With God.' This is an excellent book and well worth reading, again and again.

WOW! This is the Least Known of His Books but the Best

I read The Spirit of the Disciplines and The Divine Conspiracy years ago, but I did not know about this book until I read that it was part of a trilogy with these other books. It is my favorite of the three! What wonderful wisdom. A conversational relationship with God is so foundational to everything, and God still speaks to us today! This is a deep and lovely book. Do not miss reading it!

I am glad to hear this was re-released with the title, Hearing God (http://www.amazon.com/Hearing-God-Developing-Conversational-Relationship/dp/1596440546/ref=tmm_abk_title_0). The whole time I was reading this, I thought In Search of Guidance does not explain what the book is all about.
