About the Author
NICOLE ROBERTS JONES is the founder and CEO of Imani Corporation, a non-profit organization designed to build-up and empower African American youth and young women through a series of programs and workshops. She received her Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Southern California and has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Southern California School of Social Work and the Boston University School of Social Work. In 2007, Jones was a recipient of the Best of You Award from Glamour magazine.

A Must-Read for Black women of any age!

In a society in which instant gratification is normalized, Nicole Roberts Jones' "Define Your Own Way" was a breath of fresh air! It really pushes young women to have faith in their dreams and their education. Hard-work and faith are presented as pillars to success opposed to instant gratification. I would recommend it to African-American women of any age. If I could suggest it for an age range in particular I would definitely say college/post-college. Specifically because it presents such a different and intentional road to happiness than the video model/reality star images that most teen and college-age women are exposed to through the media. *I fall into this age category so I am speaking from experience!*
I really appreciated how much Jones asks the reader to examine their relationships, sense of faith, and God given purpose. Jones makes it easy for one to adapt their dreams/life/self to the book. You may be uncomfortable during some of this book because you really have to focus on things that you may have been procrastinating on doing. However, writing everything down and following the plan that she outlines for you makes it difficult NOT to succeed.(The book comes full of space to respond to questions and tables so that you aren't squeezing it all into the margins!)
It is a very empowering read, which for the first time in many years pushed me to think beyond the dollar signs, beyond the salary, and focus on the legacy that I can potentially leave behind for my community.
This was a gift from my older sister, and what a great choice. It fills me with joy to know that a book such as this one exists, and that when my little niece grows up I have something to share with her that I may not have been able to fully articulate myself.

Wonderful Book w/ Unforgettable Life Lessons

I give this book two thumbs up.
I am an African American woman who has been trying to figure out my life for some time now. I grew up in a great home but in a tough and poverty-strickened environment. Moreover, I felt like I was being pulled into two different directions and (in the beginning) I allowed my environment to win. However, after giving birth to my son, I realized that I had to do more with my life and I decided that it was time to continue my education, which is where I am now. I will admit that it gets challenging at times but I have committed myself to something that means the world to me therefore, I refuse to let myself fail. For this reason, I began to search for motivational material to help me through my journey... I stumbled across this book, read the summary, and researched the author's website and realized that I could not pass it up.
All I can say is that this book really spoke to me. It was so nice to read about women (the author and the successful women that she referred to throughout her book) who have been in my shoes and ACTUALLY MADE IT. I have been inspired and my motivation has dramatically increased because of her words of wisdom.
I recommend this to any woman who needs the motivation to strive for her goals.

It's up to the woman to decide her path in life. "Define Your Own Way: Empowering Young African American Women" is an inspirational read targeted at Black women who want to push themselves to succeed further in their lives and find their own inspiration and drive. With no shortage of wisdom, "Define Your Own Way" is a thoughtful and very solidly recommended read that shouldn't be missed by any young black women in charge of her own destiny.
