Great collection, if you don't mind low readability

For anyone interested in classic literature (which includes me), this would be a great purchase. John Steinbeck was a great writer, and to have 'The Grapes of Wrath' and 'Of Mice and Men' in one leather-bound collection must be great for all Steinbeck scholars/fans.

Here's my bone to pick (and why the rating is not five stars): there is very little to write home about with regards to readability. The page format, as with all the releases in this collection, is sometimes bothersome. The font is smaller than your average hardcover book release, even though the pages are larger. Also, there is no blank space between paragraphs and little line spacing. The large pages, fairly small font, small line spacing, and lack of blankness between paragraphs makes, in short, for a novel collection in which each page is composed of about 50 lines of writing. For readers used to page structures with good line spacing, this can be rather tedious. So, as with all Amaranth Press Masters' Library releases, this is for those who don't mind that.

A Good Steinbeck Collection

If you enjoy Steinbeck, then this is a nice book to have. It has copies of The Grapes of Wrath, the Moon Is Down, Cannery Row, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men. The quality of each book is up to the opinions and personality of the stories, but the collection is a nice. A lovely hard cover and golden sided pages. It's a huge book, but hey, it's got The Grapes of Wrath, the Moon Is Down, Cannery Row, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men in one huge collection. What do you expect!? All in all, a very nicely done book.

Copy is poorly edited and the jacket is blue.

Cover isn't black as pictured, it's a rediculously cheap looking blue (doesn't look classy on the bookshelf). Tons of the copy is misspelled which is super annoying while reading. Try a different publisher. Shipping was as promissed though.

He was the former host of a daily radio program, Lifeline to Truth in Salem, Oregon and in the Los Angeles area, as well as host of a weekly television program, A New Way to Live in Portland, Oregon. H.B. is author, with Neil B. Wiseman, of Pastors at Greater Risk, For Kids’ Sake and The Shepherd’s Covenant for Pastors. NEIL B. WISEMAN is a veteran pastor, clergy educator, writer, editor and small-church consultant. Perhaps his foremost passion in life and ministry has been the development of pastors. Excellent practical introduction

The majority of do-it-yourself holography books have at least one major flaw. These range from "you can do this on a sand table" (sand and optics do not mix, sir!) to "now, from the Laplace transform of the spatial function we can see" (maybe *he* can see it, but non-physicists can't.)
Iovine's book has none of these flaws. He just explains how to do holography with minimum equipment and expense. It's a practical book. Holography can be expensive if you're just going to try it out, but Iovine shows you how to cut the costs by building your own laser, your own optical table, beam shutter, and how to use film rather than plates.
If you want theory, he has a fine -- short -- and intelligible explanation of why it works, with no mathematics required.
I've got Saxby, Unterseher and Iovine on the book shelf of the optics lab. They're all classical texts in their own right, but only one of them is dog-eared, and it's Iovine.

Enlightening!

This book is excellent. Iovine describes how light works, how holograms are formed, how to build inexpensive optic stands, how to make a high-voltage power supply, how to put together a timed shutter mechanism--okay, you get the point. Although some of the information presented is now long-in-the-tooth, the book, in my opinion, is one of the best resources available for the DIY holography enthusiast.

It reads like a theology book for seminary

I was told by my friend's husband that this was a book about missionary experiences but it's really not--and it's very pithy, hard to read and it's not about that at all. It reads like a theology book for seminary. If that's what you're looking for--then go for it! It was hard for me and decided not to continue after a couple chapters! I told him I had read the book "Imagine Heaven" and I read him a part out of the book about a Hindu boy who was searching for the God of Light-that he read about in his father's Hindu holy book. He had followed all the holy men's instructions to be able to find this God of Light but never was able to. He was so despondent over this at the age of 16 that he was ready to kill himself because he had done everything in his religion to find the God of Light. As he was on the train tracks about to die, a voice came to him and said, "I am the God of Light you are searching for. My name is Jesus"! He had never met a Christian or read a Bible in his entire life! Wow! After I read this portion of the book to my friend's husband he told me I needed to read, Eternity in Their Hearts. But it's really more of a theology book. I was very disappointed. Read "Imagine Heaven" by John Burke! It's awesome! It changed my worship of God in a very profound way!!

Simply astonishing ... all believers should read

Don Richardson is a Canadian Christian missionary with a doctorate in literature; he has studied languages and tribal cultures. In Eternity in their Hearts, he shows how peoples all around the world, with no apparent exposure to orthodox religious instruction, apparently grasped the gospel message. The God/Allah/Jehovah/YHWH of the Abrahamic religions appears to be identical to Viracocha of the Incas; El and Elyon of the Canaanites; Thakur Jiu of the Santal; Magano of the Gedeo; Koro of the Mbaka; Shang Ti of the Chinese; Hananim of the Koreans; Y'wa of the Burmese Karen; Karat Kasang of the Burmese Kachin; Gui'Sha of the Burmese Lahu; Siyeh of the Wa; Phra-Ariya-Metrai of the Shan and Palaung; Chepo-Thoru and Gtuang of the Indian Naga and Mizo.

It was Paul who made it clear that the gospel message applied to gentiles and it is a Pauline message (Romans 2:14-15) that provides Richardson with the idea for the title of the book: "They are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are WRITTEN ON THEIR HEARTS, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing them, now even defending them." Richardson also points out that Genesis includes the words: "... and ALL PEOPLES ON EARTH will be blessed through you." The book of Luke, relating the story of Simeon recognizing that Mary was carrying the future Messiah, says: "My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared IN THE SIGHT OF ALL PEOPLE, A LIGHT FOR REVELATION TO THE GENTILES and for glory to your people Israel ... ALL MANKIND WILL SEE GOD'S SALVATION." I never understood the story in Matthew 15:21-28 about Jesus' interaction with a Canaanite woman to whom he said "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel" but Richardson convincingly portrays this parable as Jesus' way of explaining the broader mission to the disciples.

In perhaps the most controversial quote of the book, Richardson echoes the words of missiologist Ralph Winter: "Jesus did not come to give the Great Commission! He came to take it away - from the Jews who had already possessed it in prototype for nearly two thousand years and had done almost nothing with it! It was time for the world to see what believing Gentiles, entrusted with that same imperative in New Testament form, would do with it." Richardson continues: "from Judas's ethnocentric viewpoint, Jesus' soaring ambition to dissipate Messianic blessings over the entire Gentile world (instead of concentrating the blessing among Jews where it could really count for something) must have seemed entirely impractical! Apparently Judas saw at last that Jesus really was serious about throwing the banquet hall of Jewish privilege open to Gentile dogs! If so, then Judas may have been the most intelligent of the 12 disciples, because the other 11 ... took much longer to take that emphasis of Jesus' ministry seriously."

Paul and Barnabas declared (Acts 13:46-47) "We now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth." Richardson parlays all of this into a fascinating idea about how the gospel message could have been dissipated through more than the "orthodox" Christian church. This is an excellently researched and presented book; it challenges many elitist ideas and offers a valuable insight into what the author has shown to be a worldwide phenomenon. Wonderful.

Clear Strengths, Clear Weaknesses

The study of religious anthropology is a sociological field dominated by evolutionary thought. As the "just so" story goes, humanity first developed brands of animism and polytheism to plead to gods of specific animals, seasons, and natural forces to aid in their daily lives. From there, polytheism turns to henotheism and brands of theism. And, the tale sometimes goes, theism will evolve to atheism which will be the pinnacle of sociological evolution. As Huxley put it, we will then have all the benefits of Christianity without any of the drawbacks.

The strength of Richardson's book is the powerful and well-documented refutation of this tale. His primary goal is to present the case that God placed himself as the only Creator God in the hearts of humans, and that the most "ancient" peoples among us still "remember" that truth. In other words, monotheism is the most ancient religious preference of the human race.

Richardson travels through time and multiple tribes and ethnic groups to display how the basics of the Christian gospel are woven into their traditions and histories. Over and over, he produces stories supporting his thesis. In addition, there is first and second-hand documentation as well as scholarly citation in defense of his theory. For the Christian, and for the open-minded, this can be an exciting book to read!

The weakness of the book is in the second part - the biblical exposition. Richardson wants to show the reader that the primary theme of the Bible is wrapped up in apostolic mission to unreached people groups. And as is the case when someone has a singular agenda with Scripture, a lot of passages get taken out of context to support the agenda. The second part of the book could have been about one-third its size and would have been a stronger case in support of the first part.

With that in mind, I believe the reflective reader can be greatly encouraged by Eternity In Their Hearts.

King's Beloved Community, and help getting there

Lennon and McCartney summed up the spirit of our age very succinctly in one of their catchy tunes with the words "I, me, mine." Even those of us who reject the at times extreme individualism of libertarianism or Ayn Rand's version of it cannot help but be affected by our society's relentless focus on the autonomous individual's success or failure in the relentless pursuit of "more" of what consumer capitalism has to offer us. But hey, that's just the way the world works, right? After all, no less an authority than Ronald Reagan assured us that we rise or fall based on our own abilities or lack thereof, end of story. You're on your own. Buck up. Be Happy. Quit whining.

Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in something very different. He called it the "Beloved Community." King certainly believed in the kingdom to come, but with many other Christians ever since Jesus he also believed that it was incumbent upon everyone of us to live out the Greatest Commandment and to create heaven right here on earth, in the here and now, for us to enjoy until we go home to that perfect kingdom. King's Beloved Community would be founded on love, justice, and peace. King understood those words as Jesus understood them, not as cramped, limited, and individualistic, but instead as grace poured out on everyone in community together. That's my language, not his, but that's how I understand what he meant.

Somehow, before reading this book I had never heard or read about King's idea of "somebodiness." We are "somebodies" because we are God's children and God loves us. When we suffer oppression and injustice, God suffers with us. How, then, do we deal with that suffering? Some of it we deal with through the political process, community activism, and the works of mercy. But we are individuals, of course, and sometimes we do have to deal with our individual problems individually.

This book, as its title indicates, sets about to make sense of King's ideas in the context of pastoral care and counseling for oppressed peoples. Author Chinula sketches the background necessary to understand how pastoral counseling operates these days, in a model based on depth psychology and the analytical method worked out variously by Freud and his adherents and detractors. This is what Chinula describes as the hyperindividualistic model, just slightly modified for pastor and congregant instead of psychiatrist or psychologist and patient. He then goes on, I think, to do a masterful job of showing how and why this model, as helpful as it is to the individual, is not enough to address the larger problems of the Beloved Community, which he sketches skillfully. This book is built not only on psychological theory, but also good historical and social science scholarship and on the best of Spirit-infused Christianity too; in the footnotes you'll find Carter G. Woodson, James Cone, Joan Chittister, Paolo Freire, Howard Clinebell--who wrote the foreward--and many more.

I think King was absolutely right to make social criticism the cornerstone of his ministry given the society he lived in. And in doing this, I think he was doing as his Lord did. Why did Jesus quote Isaiah so much? Like Jesus, Isaiah was just as concerned by the structural faults of the nation of Israel as he was by the individual sins of any one Israelite. Isaiah was not "soft on sin," and neither was Jesus. We have to work on our own sins individually with the help of the community, but we can only solve the community's problems working together. Sadly, we are still dealing with some of the same structural sins of society that we did not solve in King's day, and we pile on new ones all the time. I have no doubt that were he with us today and able, Martin Luther King, Jr. would be marching still.

I am not a pastor or a counselor, but I found this book extremely valuable; I think others may agree with me that it belongs on the "reread regularly" shelf. And it certainly encourages me, despite everything this world throws at me, to continue to do what I can to advance the "Beloved Community."

I read this book for a class with the topic of building the beloved community. The book examines oppression in all forms but focuses on the strategies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As the civil rights movement developed. The book explains how Dr. King's principles of non violence were framed by his theology of freedom for all in Christ.

Excellent book

A grandmother, Granddaughter team has written an amazing book about the importance of this thing called love!

As a young lady Cara Symank lost her mother to a tragic accident on the front lawn of her grandparent's house. Years later as an adult Cara begins to look back on the legacy that her mother left her. The very things that sustained her throughout the remainder of her childhood.

Together Carole and Cara have created a book that is a lasting legacy to a mother and daughter they both adored. In these pages you will discover what matters in the life of your children and how these things are passed down from generation to generation. This book explores the importance of letting your daughter know through your actions and your time how very much she is loved and how special you consider her. It is this love that will drive her to love others as she grows up.

I appreciate the sincerity and honesty of the writers in the exploration of a mother's long reaching effect. Are you leaving a legacy that will sustain your children? Still the best book on sexuality being interrelated with spirituality.

I reread parts of this book after first having read it nearly 30 years ago. I think it still sets the standard on the intimate relationship between sexuality and spirituality from Christian authors. Nelson rightly repudiates those in the Christian faith who want to claim spirit but not flesh, of which there are millions. His chapter on gayness and homosexuality remains the best in explaining the reasons the reasons for full acceptance in the Church. Though so-called conservatives will shout at the top of their lungs that there is liberal bias, it is clear to me that Nelson is simply trying to live out the Gospel as he sees it. In my view, nobody before or since has done it better in regards to the connection between sexuality and spirituality.

Challenging you to think clearly

I have read Embodiment and found it challenging. The author is well versed in the area of theology and Christian history. His purpose is to look honestly and clearly at the issue of human sexuality in the biblical context. What is refreshing, he takes psychology and sociology as tools to help him understand human sexuality. If we believe humans are the creation of the Creator, then we have to honestly look at them as they are in this creation. This book builds my faith, not tears it down; it also helps me think, not hide from things that might make me uncomfortable.

Life Changing

I first read this work in the late '90's, and it revolutionized my views of sexuality and Christianity. I would highly recommend it to anyone who seriously struggles as a person of faith with intimacy issues. Additionally, the author explores many aspects of sexuality as they relate to the Church, thus making it a worthwhile read for any thoughtful Christian. Although written in the late '70's, the themes of this book read as though written for today--a must for every library!
