Counseling Persons with Addictions and Compulsions: A Handbook for Pastors and Other Helping Professionals is designed as a text for those in training for pastoral ministry as well as being a useful resource for clergy and other professionals addressing a wide array of addictions and compulsions. The volume deals with such issues as addiction to alcohol, gambling, tobacco, cocaine, inhalants, over the counter drugs, prescription drugs, steroids and methamphetamines, as well as compulsive shopping, exercise, computer use, and eating. In this period of widespread concern with addictions and compulsions, it is especially important that pastors and others in ministry understand how to help guide persons through these issues.
Part 1 offers information about the important role that clergy and the faith community serve in the mental health care of addicted persons and their families. This section spells out the need for special expertise by pastors and other religious professionals in how to recognize and address these conditions. This part of the book outlines the latest research-based information about how individuals and families use religion to prevent addictions from arising, as well as how faith can help them cope with the emotional distress related to these issues.

The text is written for people of all faiths, with an appreciation for the richness of the intergenerational and multicultural diversity found in religious communities. The authors are people of faith with specialties in mental health.
Dr. Weaver is a clinical psychologist and ordained United Methodist minister who has served rural and urban parishes. He has written over 160 scientific articles and book chapters and has co-authored 12 books. Dr. Charlene Hosenfeld is a Presbyterian laywoman and licensed clinical psychologist in Hawaii who has a private practice and also works in a hospital setting. She has more than 24 years of clinical experience and has worked with numerous clients who suffer from addictions. Dr. Koenig is professor of psychiatry and internal medicine, as well as director of the Center for Religion/Spirituality and Health at Duke University Medical Center. He has written over 200 scientific articles and book chapters and has authored or co-authored 30 books.
