It's not Sassing -- It's Constructive Change

Chances are that when you were growing up, your parents did not highly value backtalk. In fact, such sassing may have gotten you into hot water or earned an encounter with some "applied psychology." While some may see backtalk as a negative, author Susan Willhauck views it as a positive catalyst for change within the church. In her new book, Backtalk!, she argues that such assertiveness is necessary for the Christian church to engage in meaningful dialogue regarding the role of women.
We may recall the Virginia Slims ad and tagline, "You've come a long way baby." Willhauck, an associate professor of Christian formation and discipleship at Wesley Theological Seminary, might counter that times have not progressed quite far enough in order to harness the energies of women as positive change agents in the Church. She provides a feminist perspective that draws from Miriam, who "sassed God" and other sources to describe the Bible as a paradigm of dialogue and counterpoint.
Prof. Willhauck offers no head-in-the clouds theoretical perspective, but instead presents a useful checklist of tips and suggestions for women in order to talk back in a constructive manner to effect positive change. She draws from sources including the African American community, women in the Korean church and other examples of positive change agents.
Backtalk need not have a negative connotation. Prof. Willhauck's thoughtful book is a blueprint for encouraging constructive dialogue and showing how assertive communication can serve as a force for positive transformation in God's community.

Chap's Expressions ([...]) admires the author's willingness to share the difficulties of women on their journey to fulfilling their call to ministry. The accuracy with which Dr. Willhauck has upheld the contributions of brave males who lead the way for these women to be chosen. Their stories could have been left out, without a voice to tell their side and why they felt the need to spearhead their cause. The book provides a true pictorial of the struggles women face today in the 21st century. But here's why we admire the book most:
