Love the author, many great books. I used to own this, but had mislaid it. Glad to have it back, like an old friend.

We may not know a whole lot about everything but we can know a little about some things. But, oh, what little we can know!
By THowerton
Francis Schaeffer tackles what is, for many, the most fascinating and/or far-fetched and/or relevant and/or mythological and/or foundational portion of the Bible: the first 11 chapters of Genesis. He treats them as history, though not history in a post-modern scientifically idealized sense. No, their history is not to merely record and pass on factual data or events supposedly devoid of intrinsic meaning but rather to explain: who God is; why we are here; why we are in our current condition; and the program of hope that God employs. It does so with snapshots, poetical language, and artistic ordering none of which contradicts an historical understanding of the text, just not history as we are contemporarily used to. And, Schaeffer stresses, this is all a part of “space-time”, i.e., actual occurrences with locational markers and time-stamps.

Schaeffer draws out the designs within the framework that many, if not most persons, have trouble seeing. He applies philosophical argumentation to the text, not just theological regurgitation, and doing so likely makes it difficult for many layman to follow (another review said that this is a work for layman and while I don’t wholly disagree it can certainly be argued that society in the past 40 years has moved far away from encouraging one to think or examine philosophical and metaphysical realities, much less think in related terms, and so can’t utilize the same types of language and expressions to deliver the same effect—contemporary lay audiences need a dumbed down version). Importantly his doing so, his careful examining of the text and what it is communicating allows him to expose us to certainly the psychology of man and (if one may also say it) to the psychology of God. Nowhere is this better expressed than in chapter 5 “the space-time fall and its results”: “Man’s sin causes all these separations between man and God, man and himself, man and man, and man and nature. The simple fact is that in wanting to be what man as a creature could not be, man lost what he could be. In every area and relationship men have lost what finite man could be in his proper place.//But there is one thing which he did not lose, and that is his mannishness, his being a human being. Man still stands in the image of God—twisted, broken, abnormal, but still the image-bearer of God. Man did not stop being human. As we have seen in Genesis 9:6 and in James 3:9, even after the Fall men are still in the image of God. Modern man does not see man as fallen, but he can find no significance for man. In the Bible’s teaching man is fallen but significant.” (pg. 100)

It’s true that considering its subject matter the book is short but it’s pithy. It’s divided up into the following chapters: 1) creation (2) differentiation and the creation of man (3) God and his universe (4) the point of decision (5) the space-time fall and its results (6) the two humanities (7) Noah and the flood (8) from Noah to Babel to Abraham. This is a discussion and elaboration on these chapters though some may want to call this a commentary. Schaeffer does not dissect or analyze every verse, but he does refer to most and cross-references many other biblical accounts. It’s a recommended read if the reader has a moderate ability to understand philosophical lines of reasoning.

Nice layman commentary
By Ansen Plopbundle
Genesis in Space and Time is a layman's commentary on Genesis 1-11, with a bit of a philosophical twist. That doesn't mean it is shallow, but it does have a philosophical bent or approach to the text. It is about understanding the world as a whole (9), and rebuffing the liberal approach to these chapters that would suggest they are Hebrew psychology or myth. Without Genesis 1-11, Schaeffer wants argues that no answer to life's ultimate questions can be found (objectively speaking).

So, Schaeffer believes the events described are historically real (w/o arguing exactly how they are historically real at every turn, though he does offer some opinions). He discusses varying views on how some of the events can be historically real (such as the flood, time constraints of creation, genealogies, etc.).

Schaeffer hammers home the trinitarian existence `before' creation. Humanity's major problem is that of being and the trinity answers that question, or provides the foundation for it. This way the beginning of the universe has personality, form, love and communication (24). In fact, the entire Bible hangs on the issue of the trinity, Schaeffer writes (26) - that "God had someone face-to-face" with himself . . ." (26).

Denying creation ex-nihilo is at the root of problems for the society of Schaeffer's time (30). It is creation first, then differentiation (differentiation of man from everything else, from woman, etc), and then separation (man from himself, from woman, and from nature as a whole). Thus, one cannot view nature as ultimately normative - it does not function as it should. It too is fallen. Ultimately we are brought back to the restoration of all things through Christ, the second Adam.

Although this is about forty years old, I think it is still very relevant. Schaeffer is conversing with secularism, and it is likely that the world is growing moreso in that direction. For the reader already familiar with Schaeffer, he or she will likely not be disappointed as this falls right in line with the rest of his thought and writings.
