About the Author
JOHN WOODEN was a high school and college coach for 40 years. During that time, his teams won more than 80 percent of their games. From 1948 to 1975, his UCLA Bruin teams claimed 10 NCAA national championships, including 7 in a row, and at one time won 88 consecutive games. Wooden is in the Basketball Hall of Fame both as a player and a coach. He originated the Pyramid of Success and is the coauthor with Jay Carty of the recent best-seller Coach Wooden One-on-One. Coach and his wife, Nellie, were married 53 years when she passed away in 1985. He currently lives in Southern California and, at 90-plus years of age, continues to lecture across the country. JAY CARTY has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, coached basketball at his alma mater, Oregon State, and been a part of John Wooden’s UCLA coaching staff. After hanging up his basketball shoes, Carty entered ministry. For 25 years he has been a traveling preacher and has written seven books, including Counter-attack and Playing with Fire. Jay and his wife, Mary, live in Santa Barbara, California.

The Man and His Pyramid

I am a long-time fan and admirer of the late, legendary Coach John Wooden, and his famous Pyramid of Success. I read this book wanting to learn more about both the man and the Pyramid. The book did teach me about both, but my education was a bit diluted by the execution of the authors' best intentions.
The book was logically organized around the Pyramid's fifteen building blocks and its ten mortar qualities (the mortar that holds the building blocks together). A four-page chapter was dedicated to each of the building blocks and mortar qualities. Each chapter had three parts: Coach's experienced thoughts; Jay Carty's biblical perspectives; and then Bible readings, probing questions, a commitment statement, and a concluding prayer to help readers apply the chapter's principles to their lives.
Coach Wooden was a very spiritual man, and he helped inspire my own budding spirituality. In this book, I expected to read about how his spirituality influenced his Pyramid. However, the book was much more Bible-focused than I expected. I found too many Bible passages too long (I printed all the cited passages in seventy-three pages!) and disconnected from their chapter topic. Fewer, shorter, and more focused/more easily understood Bible passages would have been much more effective in complementing the authors' preceding insights.
I am sure many people will find the book's content properly balanced, and appropriate for their expectations. As much as it pains me to say something less than stellar about Coach Wooden's work, I was disappointed with this book. Overall, I would still recommend it for anyone wanting deeper insights into Coach Wooden and his Pyramid of Success.

Inspirational!

The author coached under Wooden and therefore knew the man and the foundation of his pyramid. Christian faith aside, this book would benefit anyone seeking to live a better, more successful life. The fundamental principles are timeless, unlike the shifting values of our popular culture. Stop wavering in uncertainty and aimlessness and discover and apply the fundamentals presented by the master, coach Wooden!

not what i expected. i am a huge john ...

not what i expected. i am a huge john wooden fan and have read several of his books. there was to much religion. i know it is fundamental to wooden but not my cup of tea. there are other books that focus on his principals with out the overtones.
